Mark Hogancamp(Carell) is the victim of a brutal attack, leaving him with an inch of his life. This hate crime also took the majority of his memory before said attack. To help cope with the PTS of his trauma he creates an art instillation/world called “Marwen” using dolls that have similarities to the people closest in his life. He photographs and makes small adventures that coincide with his day to day. When the time comes to face his attackers in court Hogencamp uses “Marwen” to give him the “Rocket fuel” to seek justice and get his life back in order.
Unfortunately, this movie did little to nothing for me. In theory this story is very intriguing and the documentary ”Marwencol”(2010) and true story it’s based off of has very high ratings. Sadly, I think Carell and Zemeckis could not accomplish this. The story was Bombastic and dialog was bland and boring at best. The CGI scenes when in “Marwen” although dazzling to look at, couldn’t keep my interest and I found myself dozing off twice(being awaken by my fiancé, who was also irritated by the films slow moving story). 1👍🏻 out of 5 is what I can give this film.
Steve Carell did a fine job emulating the real Mark Hogancamp/Cap N’ Hogie. I don’t think the acting was the problem. I think that a human interest story is only good when it’s just that sometimes.Adapting a true story can be extremely difficult and adding instances and bits like giving his drug addiction one of the woman of Marwen dolls only creates confusion. I didn’t really understand what was happening in the film until about an hour in. We also don’t get enough background of any of the main characters that inhabit Marwen. This is where great actors like Janelle Monaé and Eiza González get lost. I also wasn’t a huge fan of Leslie Mann outside of her usual comedy role. I think she has an amazing range and can play many types of characters, but I just didn’t find this one to be something great for her.
The movie felt like it ran a little to long with no real climax to keep you hooked and I didn’t really find myself rooting for the main character. I did feel sorrow for his situation but the other Characters treated his high heel fetish as a condition rather then just something he was into. I do want to give this movie some type of commendation of showing different ways to pull through a bad situation, but the message alone wasn’t enough to save this film for me.
Overall, nothing really stands out to me in this film and I feel like you can skip it all together. I think that if you really want to learn more about this story you can see the documentary it’s based off of or try and catch the actual photos, if they are touring about in a gallery near you. But this is a hard pass for me.
