Mark Lang, Collaborative Fiction, 2008. The artist is Édouard Manet, and the painting is Olympia. And that painting is in turn based on Titian's 1538 Venus of Urbino, which copies Giorgione's Venus Reclining, which in turn copies a woodcut attributed to Francesco Colonna... the models are the painter Victorine Meurent (as the sex worker) and professional painter's model Laure or Laura (as the maid). (I don't think art history has recorded the name of the cat.)
How the Heather Looks: A Joyous Journey to the British Sources of Children's Books. Joan Bodger. Mark Lang (Illustrator). McClelland & Stewart, 1999.
Over forty years ago, Joan Bodger, her husband, and two children went to Britain on a very special family quest. They were seeking the world that they knew and loved through children’s books. Bodger brings alive again the magic of the stories we love to remember. She persuades us that, like Emily Dickinson, even if we “have never seen a moor,” we can imagine “how the heather looks.”
