Final Letter

Dear Mark, 

This class has been so different than everything else I have done so far at the University and that’s a good thing. Overall I enjoyed this class. I liked that you gave us so much freedom with the assignments because it allowed for creativity and self-discovery. Sure most of the class might have enjoyed that hand holding but personally I found it a bit strange. The way you made us have to actually dig into our thoughts to come up for something for the assignments made me realise how good you were at your job. The reflections that you had us do helped me gain a better understanding of myself and the way that I think

I also enjoyed that you gave the whole class so much freedom, but that did cause a lot of problems when writing our assignments. As someone who has always had to do things by the rules, and follow instructions I had trouble coming up with an idea for each paper. I had the constant fear that I wasn’t doing them right, even though you constantly reminded us that we can’t do it wrong. At one point near the end of the class I just gave in and wrote whatever came to my mind.

I already knew about many of the things you showed us, but learned new words such as bricolage, folksonomy, etc. Also Geotagging helped me a lot to so thank you for that. Overall I think that you’re a great teacher and that you obviously know what you’re doing, I hope that throughout my time here at Guelph Humber I can be in your class at least one more time. Know that I know what kind of person you are I can maybe enjoy and do better in my work the next time. Thank you for everything you have allowed me to learn about myself. Have a great summer!

Invisible Technology

When you see the word Technology what is the first thing that comes to your mind? If the first thing that came to you mind was electronic then you are not thinking big enough. In this day and age the word Technology is mainly associated with electronic materials. When everyday household items were created they were also known as Technology to people of that time. Let’s talk about the Fork. As a piece of cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines on one end. The utensil (usually metal) is used to lift food to the mouth or to hold ingredients in place while they are being cut. Food can be lifted either by spearing it on the end of the fork, or by holding it on top of the fork, which are often curved slightly. A fork is also shaped in the form of a trident but curved at the joint of the handle to the points. It did not become common in northern Europe until the 18th century and was not common in North America until the 19th century. There has been hundreds of types of forks created for example the Spork. Before Forks were a popular item at the table, knives had its spot and when the fork started to become popular it helped people easily eat different types of food. I cannot imagine eating spaghetti with something other than a fork.

Intertextuality

I think intertextuality is when one work interplay's with another. A good example of this is in the movie The Untouchables where they recreate the Odessa steps scene but as their own version. In the original Odessa Steps there is a shooting and a large crowd is running down the steps and a baby carriage containing a baby is rolling down to the bottom while its mother is screaming near the top and in The Untouchables The same scene is recreated but in the background the gangsters are having a shootout. Another movie that shows intertextuality is The Disaster Movie and this movie contains parodies about other famous events and movies all in one. You can find intertextuality in most movies being made these days.

Wiki Participation

This is the first time i have used Wiki spaces and personally my experience was not that great with it. I have had a number of issues while trying to post or log onto Wiki spaces, for example it would not let me log in my account so i could check the syllabus and i had to wait a couple days. The only thing about Wiki spaces i do like is that we can connect with our peers and talk about work in class. Also that the Prof can respond to any of our questions there and give us at least a small piece of guidance on our assignments.I did not have much to say on the Wiki because most of my questions were asked by other people, but i did regularly check in with it and check out the links that people posted. Overall i do not think i will be using Wiki spaces unless i am forced to.

Folksonomy

After finding out what Folksonomy means I have noticed I was using it all the time, being on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. When I tweet something on twitter I use tags so that other people who are interested in the same topic can see my tweet, and this helps organize and classify online content into different categories. For example if there has been a recent shooting at Guelph-Humber and I Tweet a picture of something happening at the school I would use a specific tag so that anyone who is interested or also tweeting about this can see my post and share it to others. If we did not have these tags all of these posts would be cluttered and no one would be able to find things that interest them.
