The Sensei (2008) dir. Diana Lee Inosanto
Cinematography by Mark Rutledge
This was a collaboration I did with friend and fellow artist Mark Rutledge back at art school in 2001. I found this old board which had been pre painted with various random colour in an abstract form, in fact it didn’t even seem like a piece of work and resembled itself as an off cut. At the time I was experimenting with a more linear figurative style with a combination mediums like pastel, pencil and paint. At the time I didn’t even know who Jeff Buckley was, I just picked up this Rolling Stone mag lying around the studio and saw this really cool image of a guitarist that looked so nostalgic and convincing. The pose seemed more romantic than electric so I began to paint him over this board, which is the front figure. The collaboration with Mark happened without my knowledge, after leaving this lying around my space Mark got his hands on it, liked what he saw as he was familiar with Jeff’s music, and added the second sketch figure, and other back ground textures.
After this I listened to Jeff Buckley’s music and really enjoyed it and still do, it was a random introduction to his sound which I will always have an association with.
So this really was a 3 way random process of unknowingly mystery, and this was the result. I ended up gifting this to my brother Shaun as he plays the guitar.

Meet the Team: Mark Rutledge
Meet Mark, Co-Founder and CEO of Qdup: Serial entrepreneur, C-level executive, entertainment lawyer, and father. Throughout his 20 years of experience, he has acted as an advisor to big-name clients like Disney, Viacom, Showtime, USA Networks, and Time Warner. He has also founded and helped found a number of start ups in Vancouver.
One of Mark's passions is movies, which is why he created Qdup: >“I can't remember a time when I wasn't a huge movie fan. I've always prided myself on seeing lots of movies, keeping track of them, and making sure I’d see every film by all my favorite writers and directors. >About a year ago I went to see a movie called 50/50. It was made in my hometown, Vancouver, and some of my friends who had gone to high school with its star, Seth Rogen, had small parts. As I settled in my seat, they played a trailer for The Descendants, a film directed by Alexander Payne, the director of Election and Sideways, two films I'd enjoyed very much. I thought, how is it possible that I haven't heard of this movie?! And, more importantly, how am I going to keep track of it, and remind myself to watch it? > >So I made a note in my iPhone. Then I forgot about it. Some weeks later, when the Academy Award nominations were released, I still hadn't seen it. Worse still, I'd seen almost none of the nominees. And it was then I realized I was missing the movies I really wanted to see. > >I talked to my friends to see if others had this problem, and heard stories of draft e-mails and spreadsheets and other such ways people tried to keep track of movies. Everyone told me the same story; they don't know when the movies they want to see come out, how long they're in theaters and where they go after. People used to go to the video store and it was easy to keep track. Now, we assume they’re somewhere, but where? Netflix? iTunes? Cable VOD? > >That's why we started Qdup. So that people like me can keep track of all those movies we want to see, and find out where we can actually see them. Qdup’s goal is to be the most comprehensive and accurate source for movie availability in the world. We've been working on the technology for some months now and we'll be opening a private beta very shortly.” So without further adieu, here are a few movies from Mark’s first Qdup Queue: **[The Descendants](http://qdup.com/movies/XMiTeI/the-descendants)** (Yep, still haven't seen it!) **[Tiny Furniture](http://qdup.com/movies/zX86We/tiny-furniture)** **[The Hunger Games](http://qdup.com/movies/lXW7ir/the-hunger-games)** **[The Do-Deca-Pentathlon](http://qdup.com/movies/H2ewaX/the-do-deca-pentathlon)** **[The Adventures of Tintin](http://qdup.com/movies/OQWhvZ/the-adventures-of-tintin)**
