ahhh sorry!! i just get paranoid about my babs idk but yeah no i feel you. people on facebook are going nuts with new pets recently?? and some of them don’t look well to begin with. or they’re just like… wishy-washy people? idk but i feel u
No need to be paranoid! It's always really clear that you have your babs best interest at heart and you really do your research well!
Like the wishy washy people is just a gut feeling on my part from personally knowing these people back in the day, but so many people have gone out and randomly gotten pets lately. Like they literally say their animal was a surprise-as a present or random adoption/purchase.
Animals shouldn't be surprises and of course there are exceptions and many people are very good competent owners, but I'm going to make this discussing into a post of what I think should go into positive animal ownership.
There are many correct ways to own an animal properly, but in the end the animal's quality of life is what matters.
1.) Research- not only the animal/breed of specific animal your are getting, but your own lifestyle/how does this animal fit into my lifestyle. Will I be able to provide for it, do I have the means to feed it consistently etc, provide stimulation/happiness for the animal.
-What sort of space/enclosure will this animal need? Even some kinds dogs, which we widely regard as house pets, require an outdoor enclosure. Enclosures should be recommended for outdoor Cats as well considering their effect on eco systems.
-How often will you be with your animal during the day? Some kinds of animals require more attention and time.
-Health Requirements for the animal- Certain animals need certain vaccines, perhaps you are adopting a special needs animal that will require regular veterinary attention. Certain foods are also part of the health requirements does the food your animal eats effect YOUR lifestyle and vice versa (see: Vegans feeding cats vegan foods when they really should have not bought a carnivore if they were unwilling to provide for its health and needs)
2.) Training of the Animal-people need to be able to help their animal adjust into a new environment, this may require training- yet another thing people need to think about when evaluating their lifestyle. Especially if your animal is going to be around the public (think: dog) they should be trained in all basic commands in a positive manner. This is beneficial to not only your dog, but to you, and the safety/comfort of the public. (Note this may apply to any other animal as well if in public).
-Giving an animal an adjustment period in a new environment. Some adjust just fine, but lots need time to come back out of their shells.
3.) Supporting Positive Animal People: If you are going to purchase from a breeder making sure the offspring are healthy, the parents vet checked, see the background: explore.
-Support local shelters, not all the animals inside are going to be healthy, but they hopefully will be healthy one day and then ready for adoption into a forever home.
-Positive Animal trainers: This is important. There are many positive training methods for all range of animals from cats to horses. Choosing a method that works best for both you and your animal while keeping the animal stress free are essential.
I'm sure there's plenty more to add, theres always long lists of things like this for different people so feel free to add any my animal people
