Bricks from the Kiln⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com⁣ ⁣ Originally conceived as a publication produced a signature at a time, as and when money became available, Bricks from the Kiln follows in the tradition of Typographica, Icteric, Dot Dot Dot, Situationist Times, and Theo Crosby’s Uppercase, exploring the the field of visual communication and striking a balance between historical research and current projects, art and graphic design. This inaugural issue brings together an array of chapters lifted from forth-coming books, as well as unrecorded talks, autonomous unpublished works, and investigations begun but forced aside. The Situationists loom large, as does the peripheral and the overlooked; the contents pull together photography, transcripts, essays, and diary jottings, allowing connections to develop organically, each piece a part of a larger structure. Rather than showcasing “best practices”—optimal ways for designers to take on predetermined roles—it looks at alternative models for the profession in which designers develop their own agendas and territories. As a field, design has changed dramatically over the past few decades. While Modernist designers worked to rationalize their output in the 1950s and 60s, Postmodernism shattered that seemingly objective (yet authoritative) Modernist world view in the 1980s and 90s. Postmodernism’s lack of agenda, alongside the democratization of production tools and the World Wide Web, allowed for the nostalgic return of Modernism as a so-called “Global Style”/”Zombie Modernism” in the early 2000’s, but without early Modernism’s sense of public mission and service. Now the question is: where do we stand as design practitioners, writers, and educators in the post-digital and post-internet era? How do we redefine the role of the contemporary designer? Through a Glass Darkly questions notions of design practice today by considering alternative agendas for design. It showcases practices that go beyond surface, image, and form and utilize design as a tool capable of generating references and agendas outside predetermined boundaries. It introduces designers that elevate design discourse by repurposing design in the form of writing, producing, and publishing. For almost 50 years, Brazilian-born New York–based artist Lydia Okumura (b. 1948), like her contemporaries Dorothea Rockburne and Robert Irwin, has explored the realm of geometric abstraction by challenging our perception of space in her sculptures, installations and works on paper. In the 1970s, as a young artist in her native São Paulo, she was introduced to Conceptual art, Minimalism, Land Art and Arte Povera through the Japanese art magazine Bijutsu Techou. These movements, along with Brazilian Concretism and Neoconcretism, influenced Okumura’s dynamic work in which she uses simple materials such as string, glass and paint to balance line, plane and shadow. This handsome exhibition catalog, produced to accompany the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States at the University of Buffalo Art Gallery and to encourage a critical reassessment of Okumura’s oeuvre within art history, is a rich document of her minimal practice and independent vision. #graphicdesign #typography #LydiaOkamura #MarkOwens

Rather than a monolithic monograph, this book presents a loose, personal archive, with essays by Linda van Deursen, Mark Owens, and Ian Svenonius, plus two photographic chapters with a selection of work by the studio, covering both printed matter and the documentation of site-specific pieces and installations. A glossary-like anthology of texts (fragments of interviews, lectures, correspondence, etc.) previously written by Experimental Jetset—selected, edited, and structured by Jon Sueda—concludes the volume. Experimental Jetset is a small, independent, Amsterdam-based graphic design studio, founded in 1997 by (and still consisting of) Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers and Danny van den Dungen.
