DIRTY! DIRTY! A1 BASSLINE

My friend Jordan (of DJ duo Shuffleshame) asked me to take some piccytures of the DIRTY! DIRTY! event, this past Saturday at The Woods Live (Shivava Cafe). A1 Bassline (UK) was the headlining act . I obliged and I think the images came out pretty rad. Here's what went down.

Sibot’s Landlord Remax - Sibot

Not so much a tune as a mix this noon, from one of the coolest cats in South African music today (and, if I’m real about it, the last 15 years), Sibot. A sonic patchwork knitted together with material from his mid-2000s collaboration with the equally legendary Markus Wormstorm, The Real Estate Agents, Sibot explains on his SoundCloud page, “I went back to 2004 - 2007... to find my favourite bits from that era and sample them into where Im at in 2016.″Nostalgic, maybe, but more than that this mix is an indicator of the perpetual forward motion of South African electronic music too, and that is pretty damn awesome.

Markus Wormstorm is obsessed with music that hints at narratives and stories, and he’s particularly into Sci-Fi and slow building tension. This comes through in his playlist, ‘Yesterday’s Tomorrow’, of which he says, “I browsed through my iTunes playlist to put this together with my left hand. Although I loathe it, the word ‘eclectic’ comes to mind. The playlist is not attached to a particular musical style or mood and transverses various genres. There’s some Ethiopian jazz from the 70s and some cinematic scores from the 80s. I threw in a Pulitzer Prize winning composition and lastly, added a dash of modern electronica.”
