Remember the lighthouse knife I scrimshawed for a shipmate? Yesterday, I received my half of our skills trade—a big marlinspike hand-forged from railroad steel. It makes me want to practice my knotwork, but I imagine, if needed, it would also be a pretty effective way to repel boarders. 🏴‍☠️

A scrimshawed fid or marlinspike, 19th century

Sailors fid’s were and are used for splicing, reeving and untangling the manila and hemp line used for the rigging of ships, for making grommets which are the equivalent to buttonholes in sails, canopies and tarpaulins and for any other task for which an oversize bodkin is useful in making rope and canvas. Steel marlinspikes performed the same functions, but could also be used with wire rigging.

my work boots have a tiny kn fe she-th so obviously i needed a tiny kn fe - thank god i had a metalworking class over summer break. tiny coachwhipping and turk's head for the handle are of my most recent marlinspike seamanship creations.

SOMETIME i will make a ttrpg character who has like a really heartfelt and meaningful realizing-they're-trans arc. but it is not this time. it's just like multiple times i have made a character who has like a trans allegory arc and mar kind of is that in some ways and he also is trans but realizing it is not his main arc. his arc is just way more of a general "figuring out who he is". anyway i think despite being trans he probably doesn't necessarily identify with it much (not that he has much of a sense of identity at all yet) because he doesn't remember the part of his life when he actually transitioned and he doesn't remember any part of his life when he wasn't called a man by everyone

unrelated to anything but i kind of wasn't sure of how to play my character mar at first but the more i play him the more i like him. he just simply doesn't know anything :)
