I’ve been thinking about the line “Carnations you had thought were roses, that’s us. I feel you, no matter what. The rubies that I gave up.”

Dark red Carnations have a similar symbolism to red roses but they get overshadowed by red roses getting used as the traditional form of love.

And interestingly enough Carnations last way longer than roses after being cut.
