The valleys
Without a doubt, I’m always left feeling mentally drained after a session of dissertation work. It doesn’t matter if I’m editing my proposal or drafting up variables and their measures, I am completely spent afterwards. However, I must remind myself that these moments are literally pushing me towards the finish line. I must also remember that progress doesn’t always come in the form of big wins. Sometimes, it can just be a second draft of work.
And that’s enough.
Small victories
I wrote 2 pages of my introduction chapter! Let’s always celebrate the small victories :)

- Did a dry run through of my dissertation proposal with the team today and received so much constructive feedback!
- Draft of the introduction outline = CHECK.
- Draft of my research questions = CHECK.
This is going to be an awesome dissertation, y’all. I’m asking big, practical questions that’ll hopefully help us, as providers, be of better support to our parents in the autism community. Needless to say, I am killing it with this dissertation game!
Easy.
I am overwhelmingly surprised that the logistical parts of this dissertation process has been so easy for me. I guess I’m not used to having things come so easily for me when it comes to school. Let’s be honest, the past four years were a real struggle. I fought for everything that I got. So it feels super nice to know that some parts of school can be easy. It’s a true blessing to have such a supportive dissertation committee. The Lord knows what he’s doing. And so, I continue to firmly believe that what is meant for you will never pass you by.

September: Week 1 (9/14-9/18)
September: At this point, I am working on my literature review. I’m reading to get a better sense of what research questions I would like to address in my study, and how to conceptualize a practical interest within a theoretical context. So that’s difficult right now!
Challenges: My current challenge is learning how to read articles in an efficient way. I get overwhelmed just thinking about the mountain of articles that I have to read. I also get distracted easily.
Needed support: I’d like some feedback on how to read and take notes efficiently. What are some things I should look for in an article? What should I skim/skip? What’s the average amount of time I should spend on an article? Also, what are some things that you do to stay focused while reading?
