Giles Corey, after Martha is arrested
In time for Halloween is a photo of Haunted Mill. The mill once belonged to Martha and Giles Corey. The foundation is at outflow of Elginwood Pond near Lowell and Lake Streets.
mary goes to work for a new family, makes a mistake with something and is just really surprised that she isn't beaten for it. that they still let her eat dinner. that they actually comfort her when she starts crying in panic. it's just not what she's used to.
Awww poor girl :( But she’s finally getting the care and support she deserves!!
I still really like the idea of the family she moves in with is the Nurses or the Coreys and they’re just SO CONCERNED. They’re friends with the Proctors, and they knew that they- or at least John- had a few issues with their servant, but thrashing her over a broken cup or bowl seemed terrible. When Mary accidentally broke something at her new workplace, she had started glancing around, presumably looking for the whip.
Oooh imagine her asking someone in the family (maybe her mistress, because she probably has an easier time talking to women than the master) if she should go get a switch and the woman is like, “No?? Don’t do that! Just sweep it up” and Mary is like “Oh okay. So I’m gonna get beaten with the broom” “NO!!!!”
i have to end the waterboarding fic by imagining mary gets found by mercy and so the putnams take her in and ann putnam takes care of her. or that she just goes to stay with a whole new family, like rebecca nurse takes her in.
God, that must be so worrying for Mercy to see.
Like- it’s late at night, but she’s probably doing one of her little patrols and wandered off to the Proctors. She was just going to pass by, but then she heard whimpered coming from the shed and was horrified to see Mary curled up on the floor, covered in various fluids. (And because of her past, she probably gets EXTREMELY worried and scared to see her friend all balled up like she is, most likely whimpering in pain or distress.)
She considers storming the Proctor house, but just settles on scooping Mary up into her arms (Mercy is STRONG send tweet. and it’s not like Mary is probably heavy, either,,) and carrying her back to the Putnam house, which she enters while screaming for help. And Thomas and Ann are quite worried and shocked to see the trembling girl clinging to their servant.
Upon finding out what John did to Mary, they’re all disgusted. Whipping was one thing, was simulated drowning was too far, even for Proctor. However, I can see Mary trying to smooth things over and pin all the blame on herself, saying that she deserved it or it wasn’t as bad as they think, even though she’s clearly very shaken up and there’s a few moments where she has a coughing fit and water will come up.
(Imagine her being so exhausted and resting her head back against Mercy’s chest, eyes half open and foggy, mouth slightly agape as dirty water trickles from her lips, and Mercy wraps her arms around her as a sort of grounding and protectiveness.)
Also!! I’ve never thought of Mary going to a new family to work, but I can see so many things coming out of that!
Imagine there being rumors about how terrible Mary is (thanks to Proctor complaining about her while at the tavern), so it’s hard for her to get a new job and family to work under. Finally, maybe the Nurses or the Coreys relent and decide to give her a chance. And, while a little clumsy and awkward, Mary’s actually a really good servant??? She’s obedient and has manners and does everything asked of her (sometimes she overdoes a few things, but that’s just because she’s nervous of not doing enough.)
The Nurses or Coreys realize that the only thing the kid has ever wanted was love.
