Ten and Martha: Winter Wights
“Right! Here we are, then, Martha.”
The unassuming, blue-painted wooden door to the TARDIS emitted a rusty creak on its hinges as it swung open. The Doctor poked his head out and glanced briefly left and right before a madcap grin spread across his face. His long coat flared and swirled around his ankles as he strode from the timeship, plimsoles sinking into several centimeters of soft white powder.
“The Winter Festivities of Alltopia Deux! Specifically, the Montainge Burrough. The best hot chocolate in the universe, let me tell you. Absolutely brilliant, magnifico, molto bene, like drinking pure, authentic chocolate paradise beneath piles and piles of whipped cream. And there’s ice skating! And sledding!”
He pivoted in the snow as he gushed, directing his attention back to his companion. For an instant he fell silent, and his face scrunched up briefly as he made a quick calculation. “We’re about, ooh, about eighteen thousand light years from Earth right now. And it’s the year 6378 by Gregorian reckoning. And it’s the Winter Solstice. Longest night of the year! They’ll celebrate all the way till morning to welcome the new light and keep at bay the wights and malevolent faeries they believe roam these hillsides in the winter dark.”
