November 5th 2016, Nela and Muri’s Martumpol Day. 

Yesterday was my sister’s Martumpol day. But.. Wait.. What does “Martumpol” mean? For Bataknese, we can say that Martumpol is the same with “Engagement.” The future bride and groom, declare their promise in front of the church and therefore they are bound together until the day of their wedding ceremony. They also invite their relatives and friends, and both parties from the future bride and groom, choose one person to act as the witness of this engagement. We can also define Martumpol as a pre-marital agreement, because the parents, the furture groom and bride, and the witnesses have to sign some agreement papers.  Most churches usually don’t have this kind of ceremony, only the North Sumatra-Lutheran churches do.
