12 Namor Days to Christmas!

Welcome! Have a bit of Namor cheer for each of the 12 days till Christmas! Yes, I know this isn’t the traditional count, but roll with it. This year I’ll be talking about the comic inspiration for the MCU Namor.

DAY 12:  Marvel Comics #1

I admit, I had a lot of doubts when MCU Namor was announced. But when I saw this scene, I knew someone on the film had done their research.

I immediately thought of these comic pages from Namor’s first appearance in Marvel Comics

It’s the same square platform on the ship, where airbreathers in deep water diving suits are being hoisted into the water. And Namor destroys their tethers to the ships above. Of course, in the comics Namor is a teenager who doesn’t realize the suits encase humans.

So, now, Namor’s first appearance in both comics and the MCU involves taking out airbreather divers in big bell helmets with umbilical tethers.

The Namor the Sub-Mariner 2020 Advent Calendar

Welcome to a Namor Advent Calendar!  Have a bit of Namor cheer for each of the 24 days till Christmas! This year I’ll be highlighting Namor Team-Ups!

DAY 24:  LADY DORMA

In honor of the upcoming King In Black Namor mini-series by Kurt Busiek, I’m starting with Namor’s very first team-up, in Marvel Comics #1, which was with Lady Dorma!

Unlike many future team-ups, this one doesn’t start with Namor fighting with Dorma.  Instead, Lady Dorma does what she usually does, i.e. insist on joining Namor on his adventure.  The first 8 pages of this story is actually a reprint of Bill Everett’s story for Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1.  Lady Dorma isn’t in those pages, but in the new pages that Bill Everett drew specifically for Marvel Comics #1.

Bonus picture, the original art of the last page of the story, which is also the oldest piece of Marvel art in existence.  It also shows Lady Dorma is no shrinking violet, but a capable companion.
