❛ oh, kid, they’re gonna eat you alive. ❜ they both know he’s not talking about the arena. no, marvel has a shot at that. he’s a career, most likely training for this since he was a little boy.
❛ your escort is probably gonna set up these little appointments for you, saying you need to make a nice impression on what could be your biggest sponsor. my advice ? sponsors are nice, but gifts mean nothing without skill. the only person that’s going to save you in that arena is yourself. ❜ he words it in a way that doesn’t scream forced prostitution, but hints enough that he hopes the boy pick up on it. just in case, he uses charming suave to make it look casual as he leans into the tributes’ ear. ❛ you’re a good - looking boy, marvel. they’ll try to make it a weapon. ❜

‘‘ THESE DESIGNS ARE HORRENDOUS. i doubt your stylist knows what the term ‘luxury’ means, and that’s just sad given their life as a LUXURY stylist and designer.....i can’t design for shit, and i think i could do better than this. ’’
@marvhael liked this for a starter!
“i didn’t think the victors went around to the tributes’ houses.” this was never on camera. to make it worse, he was sitting in her sister’s kitchen chair. how many times has she sat there to help prim with her homework and ate dinner with her? she was trying to stay nice, like he was just someone coming over. but she couldn’t get over what he did, even the situation forced them. “we don’t have to wait for my mom. she’s not coming.” she was in her room, just like when her father died. “if you have something to say, it’s just going to be to me.”
“hey, man, i...” he cleared his throat, adjusting the strap of his backpack on his shoulder. finn was clearly trying to approach this carefully, clearly feeling deeply sympathetic to marvel and wanting to offer whatever support he could possibly provide, but he also didn’t want to push the subject with him if it wasn’t something he wanted to talk about. but still, he wouldn’t have felt right not checking in every once in a while, even if it was always done with some degree of trepidation, given the sensitivity of the subject and how likely fresh and raw the wound ( metaphorically ) still was. “i know we haven’t had a chance to really catch up lately, but ... i just wanted to see how things were going.”

𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮. like he’s there, and not there at all. never like in your nightmares where he’s fully formed, he’s different. and you can’t help but turn around, waiting for him to vanish, but he doesn’t, he’s there, ghost like. well, fuck, that’s just great. ❝ what the hell are you? ❞ you ask, venom on your lips, whispered as to not alert prim or your mother downstairs.

HE CAN SMELL THE AWE in the tribute that reeks like sweat slipping from the pores. the scent reaches for finnick and cloaks his broad shoulders, commands gazes when he enters the room. behind those eyes there might be envy, adoration, even hatred, but OH, they still stare no matter what. everyone knows who HE is.
there’s food stretched out on the table between them, the first meal of their annual little rendezvous that did not take place on the train over. he spies rolls of bread and baked slabs of fish that both surely lack the authenticity of four, and various soups and other entrees that alone would satiate the poorest corners of their district for months. not that that’s truly a problem in four, but as pragmatic as he and his fellow survivors must be, he cannot help but feel irked by waste. it does not come from a place of earnest sympathy, but rather, logic.
he sits across from the younger and offers a wry smile.
“ hi there, marvel. it would not be in your best interest to allow our first session to be a cushion of introductions and small talk, so let’s just jump right into the mentoring aspect, yes? do you have any specific questions for me about what to expect, how to survive, sponsors? ” he reaches for a roll of bread, less to eat and more to have something to do with his hands, then tears off a strip of chewy browned crust. “ it would behoove you to have them. if not then I promise you I will never stop talking. ”
there’s really only one school in district one, and it’s not so big to the point where hyunji would never see any of the other kids from other years. it’s why he’s so familiar to her, how she immediately widens her eyes in recognition upon seeing him volunteer for the games along with the girl she thinks is his best friend. memories come flashing back into her system; being tackled from the side, struggling to get out, fishing the kn- stop. stop. stop. stop. she had to inhale a few more times before her mind calms down and brings her back to reality. that they’re already in the capitol, and soon enough he’ll be put under the scrutiny of the capitol people.
hyunji’s glad that the mentoring is not her responsibility this year. people deemed her unfit and far from being stable, she’d never be able to mentor the next tributes in her current state. hyunji is happy to comply though, in fact she would have suggested sitting out this year’s mentoring if they didn’t break the news to her before the reaping. however, there are still some things she has to talk to marvel about.
“ look, i understand that being a part of the career pack means being with your district partner. thing is, that’s not the case sometimes. when there’s only a few of you left, i suggest you leave your alliance with the careers -- even your district partner -- and finish it off alone. just a word of advice that your mentor might overlook. “ it’s not as life-changing as the other tips he could get from his mentor, but it could be if worse comes to worst. anyone who has watched the previous games would know where she’s coming from. \ @marvhael. starter call.
