Maybe spoilers for Oakburn Opus, but I can't help but be charmed by the mental image of a big scary monster guy just casually hanging out with a bunch of small town Alaskans in the 90s.

Additional thoughts below (definitely spoilers, go and watch the web series first, it's awesome):

While there is the implication that Matthaus is effectively dead in the same way Carter was hollowed out to make room for the will of the "serpent," I do personally like the idea that he's still in there to some extent, but bone tired of the fate he's been granted. 100+ years of being a rotten fish-goat-man and spending the majority of your time at the bottom of a lake or in a putrid sewer in the middle of nowhere doesn't sound like a fun fate, with or without power over life and death.

My guy missed normal people things, like alcohol, hot meals, and conversation.

His powers kinda put a weirdness filter over people's minds to keep them from flipping their shit at the sight of him. Yes, they can see his multitude of compound/hole eyes, horns, and giant stature, but their brains just don't register any of that as noteworthy or concerning. This has both dramatic and comedic implications.

On one hand, it means nobody has it in their minds to run away before he does something crazy. On the other, it means people hardly react when he smacks his head on nearly every door frame in town (for a time the guys at the only pub in town had a betting pool at how many times he'd hit his head before the end of the week), or when he scarfs down half a family-size lasagna like a starving wolf.

Not sure if the constantly changing form between depictions is a matter of in-universe artistic differences or some fluidity of his form. The one person on here suggested AI was involved, though I wouldn't be so quick to assume that's why there's so much shifting around mediums.

It is kinda weird how Ashley Carter draws like a Victorian illustrator and writes like one too, but it kinda feels like Marvpyas' mere presence sends people into a state of mind where they don't think much about modern conveniences or norms, reverting back to what Oakburn may have been like when he was human. Or maybe having everything look like it was actually from the 90s would have totally thrown off the dark and gloomy vibes of the setting, who knows?

How have the other monsterfuckers not jumped on this yet? I mean, we even get to see our guy shirtless. I am rather charmed by the character design, to put it mildly.

Anyways, I know my design for him doesn’t 100% match his actual appearance. I took many creative liberties. He totally has a long tail and gills, and no one can convince me otherwise.
