When the sun hits the waves just right.
Kitchener & HMS Hampshire Memorial at Marwick Head (Mainland, Orkney Islands).
On June 5th, 1916, the armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire hit a mine off the west coast of Mainland during a heavy storm, and sank within quarter of an hour. Of the 749 on board, only twelve survived. Among the dead was Lord Kitchener, who was travelling to Russia to persuade Tsar Nicholas II to stay in the war.
