PRAYERS FOR BOBBY (2009)
This movie has such an incredibly important message for every kind of audience. Prayers for Bobby is about a teenage boy who realizes he’s gay and suffers through a significant amount of emotional abuse when his very religious family members find out. The movie is based on the true story of Bobby Griffith, who committed suicide in 1983 after years of being battered by religiously based homophobia. His mother, Mary Griffith, is portrayed as the main source of the homophobic backlash Bobby received. After his death, Mary looked inward for the causes of her son’s completed suicide and found that the hatred in her heart caused such strong depression in her son that he resorted to taking his own life. Mary Griffith later became a political figure and is remembered for sharing the message to be careful about the hatred you convey in your homes and communities. She is coined with saying, “Before you echo 'Amen' in your home or place of worship, think and remember...a child is listening”. 10/10
So I watched Prayers for Bobby last night and I've never felt so much pain and cried so much while watching a movie, because it reminded me of my situation at home (thankfully not that bad but still pretty bad). The saddest and also the most powerful movie I've ever watched! Bless Mary Griffith for eventually choosing the right path and fighting for our rights!
I realize how depraved it was to instill false guilt in an innocent child's conscience, causing a distorted image of life, God, & self, leaving little if any feeling of personal worth.
