In Canada this Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney will ask Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament. This action will trigger a national election to be held on April 28th or May 5th. The exact election day will be announced on Sunday.

This election will get substantially more attention in the US than a typical Canadian election.

Donald Trump's tariffs and threats to annex Canada have turned politics upside down in our northern neighbor – and not in a way Trump would like.

On CTV on Thursday, Vassy Kapelos had a discussion with past officials from the Liberal Party, the Conservative Party, and the New Democratic Party (NDP). Everybody on the panel was astonished with the turn of events over the past few months.

One interesting thing about Canadian politics is the disconnect often seen between the federal parties and the provincial parties. In a number of cases, they don't even have the same names.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford of the Progressive Conservative Party is a hardliner against Trump tariffs. Apparently he was asked by Trumpian Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, to help out in the upcoming federal campaign. Ford allegedly told Poilievre that he'd be too busy to help. 🤭

Inuk leader Mary Simon named Canada's 1st Indigenous governor general

Simon appointed after Julie Payette resigned amid controversy in January

Inuk leader and former ambassador Mary Simon has been chosen as the next governor general — the first Indigenous person ever to be appointed to the role.

During a news conference across the river from Parliament Hill this morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the Queen has accepted his recommendation to appoint Simon — a past president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national Inuit organization — as the 30th governor general.

"I can confidently say that my appointment is a historic and inspirational moment for Canada and an important step forward on the long path towards reconciliation," said Simon from the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que.

Mary Simon officially becomes Canada's first Inuk Governor General

'My view is that reconciliation is a way of life,' says Simon

As she was sworn in officially today as Canada's 30th Governor General — the first Indigenous person ever to hold the position — Mary Simon praised Canadians' "selflessness" and vowed to "bring people together."

Simon — an Inuk from Kuujjuaq in northeastern Quebec — took her oaths this morning in a ceremony at the Senate chamber in Ottawa.

"I have heard from Canadians who describe a renewed sense of possibility for our country and hope that I can bring people together," she said in her address.

"Every day, inside small community halls, school gyms, Royal Canadian Legions, places of worship, and in thousands of community service organizations, there are ordinary Canadians doing extraordinary things. As governor general I will never lose sight of this — that our selflessness is one of our great strengths as a nation. I pledge to be there for all Canadians."
