“I've been working in this field for over 25 years and I've never seen it so bad, four women murdered in the space of just six weeks."
The words of Sonya McMullan, regional services manager for Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland.
She said staff working for the charity have endured a difficult and challenging week following the death of yet another victim in what seems to be a never ending cycle of violence against women.
Mary Ward is the latest victim. The 24th woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since January 2020.
Her smiling face was splashed across newspapers and featured in television reports throughout last week.
Her body was found in her home in south Belfast on 1 October, but police believe she was killed on 25 September.
The 22-year-old was much more than simply the latest statistic: she was the mother of a young child, a daughter, a sister, a friend.
The Deal With Denim Day
TRIGGER WARNING: sexual assault
'Denim Day' offered everyone a chance to stand with victims of sexual violence, simply by wearing jeans
Photo via NBC News
By Katrina Ross Rodriguez
With April being Sexual Assault Awarness month, it is crucial to highlight Denim Day. This day, celebrated this year on Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 is one of solidarity and support for survivors of sexual assault.
The origin of Denim Day begins in Rome, Italy 1992 where an 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her 45-year-old driving instructor. She reported the rape and he was arrested, convicted and sentenced to six months in jail. In 1999, the driving instructor appealed the sentence, claiming it was consensual. The Italian Supreme Court repealed the conviction, arguing that due to the victim wearing tight jeans, she had to have helped him remove them. In doing this, it was considered consensual sex. This was coined as the “jeans alibi.” The women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans in front of the Supreme Court. This call to action was spread internationally and wearing jeans has become a symbol of protest against the damaging myths surrounding sexual assault and rape.
The day was first established by “Peace Over Violence”, an organization created in 1971 which aims to prevent domestic and sexual violence and abuse. Many others have followed in recognizing Denim Day. Countless of campaigns held in schools, organizations, corporations and events have sparked discussion and awareness around sexual assault. In a multitude of ways, it serves as not only a time to flaunt your favourite pair of jeans, but also as a way to demonstrate our care for survivors and our willingness to hear their experiences.
An estimate of 1 in 3 women and 1 in 8 men have experienced sexual abuse or assault in their lifetime. Protesting against the stigma and misconceptions about sexual assault, rape, harassment and violence is a step towards showing solidarity for survivors and supporting them. Actions such as encouraging survivors to speak or reach out for help, reporting acts of harassment, assault or violence, or disabling jokes that promote victimization, degradation sexist attitudes or the removal of autonomy, are simply a few ways we can put an end to the harm that rape culture induces.

Try Guys? More like Tri-Guys
The Ned Fulmer cheating scandal
By Ysmael Mendoza
The Try Guys in the video addressing the situation

Try Guys member Ned Fulmer was caught cheating on his wife with his associate producer Alexandria Herring; the controversy went viral all over social media.
The Try Guys are a popular group on Youtube consisting of 4 guys: Eugene Lee Yang, Keith Habersberger, Zach Kornfeld and Ned Fulmer. The Try Guys have built a brand of non-drama-filled content in comparison to some other creators on the platform. All they do is try different things - like becoming a drag queen or beating a chess master. In their videos, they occasionally feature their partners and employees. Ironically, Ned Fulmer is best known for always talking about his wife. Well, Ned’s most popular catchphrase “my wife” and their channel’s controversy-free streak soon came to an end.
On September 14, 2022, Ned stopped being included in the Try Guys’ introduction of their Youtube videos. That introduction normally features all four members individually, but Ned’s was suddenly gone. In late September, a Reddit user posted pictures of what looked like Ned and Alexandria Herring acting romantically together in New York. From then on, the cheating allegation against Ned started to go viral on Twitter. This includes a Twitter thread containing photos of the two, evidence that Ned was being edited out of the Try Guys’ videos, and more. Twitter was blowing up with shock over the fact that Ned “my wife” Fulmer cheated on his wife.
On September 27, 2022, when the cheating scandal was now known by everyone, the Try Guys announced on their social media that Ned was no longer working with them. “As a result of a thorough internal review, we do not see a path forward together,'' they said in their social media statement. Their tweet amassed 319.1+ thousand likes on Twitter.
On the same day, Ned posted a separate statement on his social media saying, “I lost focus and had a consensual workplace relationship.” Ned’s wife Ariel Fulmer also posted a statement where she thanked people for their support and asked for privacy for the sake of her family. For context, Ned and Ariel have two kids together. Alexandria Herring was also in a relationship with Will Thayer who she was engaged to and had been dating for a while.
On October 3rd, 2022, the remaining three members of the Try Guys released a video addressing the situation. Their anger and sadness were very apparent in the video where they provided a brief explanation of what happened. They mentioned how they could not share too much information because of legal reasons.
Saturday Night Live aired a skit mocking the Try Guys’ response video on October 8, 2022. This skit was in bad taste and was poorly received by the public, sparking backlash. They downplayed the severity of the situation and made fun of the clear power imbalance in the relationship, the emotions the Try Guys felt and the fact that they fired Ned over cheating when in reality it is because he violated workplace policy.
In conclusion, the Try Guys will remain as the three members Eugene, Keith and Zach from now on. They wish to not speak about the issue anymore out of respect for the parties involved.

Walmart Employee Found Dead In Store's Walk-In Oven In A Tragic Accident
19 Year Old Gursimran Kaur Found Dead In A Walmart Oven
By Sienna Ramos
Picture of Gursimran Kaur Photo via National Post
On Saturday October 19 Gursimran’s body was found in “a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department.”
Gursimran Kaur and her mother had both worked at the Halifax Walmart at 6990 Mumford Rd for roughly two years. On the evening of October 19, Gursimran had not been seen for approximately an hour during her shift, causing her mother to begin to panic. Mrs. Kaur asked around and tried to contact Gursimran on her cell phone multiple times, failing to reach her. This was unusual because Gursimran is normally reachable and her phone is never turned off due to her and her mothers hourly check-ins. After searching for a while, a co-worker eventually noticed and pointed out a “leakage” from the walk-in oven, leading to Mrs.Kaur finding the devastating scene of her daughter’s “charred remains”.
Once the story of her death got out, the public's interest and questions about the situation grew considering the lack of information provided by the authorities and the misalignment of information.
Walmart employees on social media platforms such as Tiktok began to demonstrate and explain the impossibility of an individual accidentally locking themselves in the walk-in oven due to the oven's inability to latch by itself, and the existing emergency release button inside the oven. Walmart employees on Tik Tok also claimed that they had never been/are required to clean the walk-in oven; which is what Gursimran was supposedly said to be doing at the time. If this were true, many viewers began to wonder why she would be cleaning the oven, and why it was turned on.
Soon, circulating questions eventually caused various rumors to spread, like her mother or co-workers potentially being involved in the death of Gursimran Kaur. Eventually, officials declared, “We won’t be able to release any details like that at this time where it’s still an ongoing investigation.” Halifax officials also claimed the case to be “complex” and would take “a significant amount of time” to acquire a result from the investigation before they release further information to the public, and ushers the public to refrain from speculating the situation, in order to respect and take the feeling of Gursimans family into consideration.
Rimple Dhunna, a local realtor who recently visited the Kaur family stated, “Her daughter died, and they did not even get any response from the police or any investigating officer (regarding) what’s going on, how did that happen, all those questions. They are devastated.” Due to the Halifax Regional Police staying silent about the investigation, Gursimrans family are left uninformed with many questions about the investigation and left unknowing of how or why their beloved daughter died.
Police officials in charge of the investigation finally declared there to be “no foul play” involved in regards to Gursimrans’s death ruling the possibility of murder.
Further information in regards to why and how she died is still left undisclosed. Until the Halifax Police release this information, her death will remain a mystery to the public. For now, all we can ask ourselves is, what really happened to Gursimran Kaur?
