"It ain't no trouble, Mary-Beth," Arthur said as he waved her over. He'd overheard Ms. Grimshaw lecture her about "not bothering the men with her silly requests" but wanting to go into town to purchase some personal supplies for herself wasn't anything Arthur thought silly. "I'm headed into Saint Denis anyway if you wanna tag along." He could feel Grimshaw's glare on him, but he ignored it as he approached his horse, getting her ready for the ride. He knew tensions could run high in camp, especially with everyone being cooped up together so long, but Grimshaw had always had it out for that girl. Arthur wouldn't pretend to know what that was all about.
"Really?" Mary Beth brightened, fighting back the urge to toss a smirk back at Ms. Grimshaw. Instead, however, she nodded and moved to get her own horse ready. "I'd love that, Arthur. Thank you."
Arthur always made time for her -- for everyone, really. She knew she wasn't special. But sometimes he made her feel that way and she really appreciated it.
