     they moved like pieces of the same weapon.  danced like ojka’s knives–––back when she had wielded them–––every push and pull conveyed through the tether between them.  when lila moved, holland felt her path.  when holland feinted, kell knew where to strike.  they were blurs of motion, shards of light dancing around a coil of darkness.  and they were winning.

              she should either step back and away or ignore the conversation and attack now. vitari’s pulse, nestled in her palm, tells her as much. ( her hands are gloved, but it is spreading, spreading up her wrist and towards her heart. she’d be a fool to ignore its warnings. ) still, she cannot find it in herself to see him as the enemy and nothing else. she cannot forget the twelve-year-old boy she met as london’s new messenger. it seems like something that happened a thousand years ago, a memory from a dream.

                he was not yet so cruel, then.

                ❛ is that a threat ? ❜ her stance shifts, the antari readying to either lunge at kell or out of his way. she can only hope holland found no major adversary on his way in ; he’s a trained fighter, that she’s certain of, but he’s never really been in a duel involving magic. thinking back to kell’s words, she hates that he’s right. but--- ❛ you’re wrong to think there’s nothing cruel in red, ❜ lila whispers, her voice almost too low to hear. ❛ not as much as there is here, but neither of us are seeing the full picture. ❜

               what was she worth, before black started eating up the white of her left eye ? the answer fits in one word : nothing.

                 ❛ i don’t want to fight you, kell. ❜ she lets out a slow, deliberate breath. the stone sings in her blood, urging her forward. ❛ but if it comes to that, i will. ❜ but i won’t kill you. not unless i can help it. it isn’t only a matter of them being among the last of their kind. it is the memory, the possibility she refuses to kill with him.

              they’ve been walking SIDE BY SIDE up until this point, calla with her arm looped around her father’s, snow crunching beneath their boots. ( this is a mild beginning for a veskan winter, she’s been told, but if this is what’s considered MILD, she doesn’t want to be around when it becomes harsh. ) with what she means to be an indignant huff but - muffled by two layers of scarves - comes out a MUTED sigh instead, she lets go of him, bouncing a couple of steps ahead. ❛ i didn’t say i liked him ! he was unfailingly sweet when we danced, is all. and i wouldn’t even have thought about it if he hadn’t ASKED. ❜

OHHH!!! also can u please @ cravesmagic + oflegendaries + kniiivesdrawn + ghezenblessed + masavenvares? i just want them to know i really adore them so much i LOVE seeing them on the dash i love seeing them interact and i adore every muse they all play!!

              He had dropped from the sky. It was, Sarai remarked to him much later, not at all the strangest thing she had witnessed with her eyes ––– those corn-flower blue eyes, wreathed in white and wide, wide, wide as he’d tumbled into the open palm of the citadel, what effectively served as her balcony. 

It was night, and she was half-convinced she was dreaming. Her moths were out in the world of Weep, and so she was without voice. However, still, she possessed hands with which to grab him, and legs with which to lead, and a bed on which for him to rest. When he was SAFE there, she drew back her moths, that great swarm of darkness on wings, and breathed them back into her. Her back was to the stranger, until the last kiss of salt and soot was inhaled. Her voice came to her, thick with confusion.

id like a meta on little holland like... learning to use his powers? to control his powers? to Get Better?

thank you!!  for this question!!!  and letting me talk abt this bc i love it!!!!

so, unlike kell and lila, he has approx. no actual training in magic, specifically antari spells or otherwise.  actual blood commands, he learned the same way he learned with alox  –––  like something he subconsciously knew revealing itself at a critical moment.  he learned as narahi coming face to face with some hired thugs who should have been faster than he was.   ( hey, i wonder if he learned as hasari in that last flashback. )   i’m honestly not sure if he only ever learned blood commands when he needed them, or if that subconscious realisation thing happened with a lot at once, but i’m guessing it was a mix of both, since he knew as travars before kell told him.  

as for elemental magic, he taught himself.  he might have tried to copy someone the rare time he actually saw a magician use their powers, but i’m fairly sure elemental control isn’t big in white.  ads.om makes it sound like the only magic they can do is a sort of summoning electricity, like astrid does, and even vortalis’ fire magic is only used to exemplify how strong a magician he is, so holland didn’t have many, if any, examples to learn from.  

practicing in public would be an easy way to get himself killed, esp since he tried to keep as low a profile as possible as a child, so he would teach himself in private, where nobody could easily find him.  in deserted alleys after dark, in his own room(s) if he had them somewhere, at the silver wood.  it was really a case of figuring out the basics  ( e.g. how can i make the water do this basic thing? )  and then practicing increasingly more complex things until he got it right.

he also learned a lot in fights  ;  not only is this a great time for any heretofore unknown knowledge of blood commands to reveal themselves, it also puts whatever skills he’s had to practice to the test.  it’s definitely how he learned to use magic in combat, and since he was young, it’s something he relies on almost exclusively.  he might be able to hold his own in a physical fight, but he’d be hard-pressed to win one without magic.   ( hence why he puts more into practicing with a knife post-ac.ol, when he either has to be able to defend himself with something other than magic, or just,, be killed / very badly hurt. )    /    @masavenvares
