Growing up I always shifted to a more “masculine “style of clothing. Most of my childhood, people thought I was a boy and I got solace from that. My mum dressed me exactly the same as my brother so we were always matching. It was always t-shirts and shorts and having my hair in cornrows helped. My hair is a part of my style but it is also my crown that has to be protected. As I got older I realised I wasn’t a girl and I still prefer more “masculine” clothing, more so because it helps my gender dysphoria. I wear a lot of oversized hoodies, jumpers, flannels, and chinos.

I almost never go anywhere without my favourite Red Mx Beanie! It’s become more of a wellbeing than a style thing for me, my red beanie has my title on it Mx, but also it hides my hair when I get dysphoric about it.

Shay is a black, queer non-binary person. They are a freelancer speaker, LGBTQ+ Activist, volunteer youth worker and creative. They use their voice and experiences to educate, empower and inspire members of the community who are underrepresented.
