Studio City: MASHstudios' Bernard Brucha Talks Shop

Based in Los Angeles, CA, MASHstudios prides itself on projects that push the creative envelope. Specializing in furniture design and manufacturing, the multidisciplinary design firm and initially got its start in a Venice Beach apartment in 2002. Today, it works with brands such as Kid Robot, Crate and Barrel, Alexis Bittar, AOL, and Microsoft.

This week, Fab is featuring several gorgeous pieces from the firm’s LAX series, a collection of handsome, minimal furniture that strives to promote calm and reductive living. The line was conceived while MASHstudios’ founder and principal designer, Bernard Brucha, lived in Brooklyn; it was eventually named for the Los Angeles International airport—the icon of arriving to L.A.

A Chicago native with a background in industrial design, Brucha says that his goal for every MASHstudios product is to help people function, and that he sees the studio’s creative team as explorers of form and materials seeking new models of design.

“We seek new ways to blend design and our living environment,” he explains. “Our answer to the need for sustainability is that we choose to work with responsibly harvested or manufactured materials and produce minimal waste in the process.”

Brucha says that the MASHstudios process was honed over the course of a decade’s experiences. The firm prides itself on thinking ahead—and refusing to be a slave to passing fads.

“Following trends is not a sustainable or interesting model. Anticipating the next move is the name of our game,” he says. “What MASHstudios does differently is what makes our products work so well. Those who live our brand come to us because they know our products are unique and timeless. They will be innovative, sustainably produced, and lasting.”

Hello!

My name is Erin and I am the newest addition to the MASHstudios fam. My goal is to provide you with interesting content on a daily basis. This will include information about our latest projects as well as insight into daily life at MASH. 

A little about me: I just moved to Los Angeles from Atlanta. I graduated from SCAD with a degree in advertising. At MASH I will be handling social media, general marketing, and basically anything else they ask me to do. :] 

We have tons of awesome projects coming up so GET EXCITED.
