Natural and Nurturing Bathroom
I’ve written before about a master ensuite I designed for one of my new build projects in Teddington, and how bathrooms should feel like sanctuaries. These are highly personal spaces, places where we begin and end our days so they need to evoke calm, comfort, and a sense of retreat.
This time, I’d love to share another ensuite I created, this one for a new build home in Surrey. It’s one of my favourite projects a truly fun experience designing such a beautiful home for a lovely family. The house was built on plot that once held an old, derelict farm, and the stunning Surrey landscape provides a stunning backdrop for the interiors.
For the master ensuite, my goal was to ensure the homeowners had a comfortable and calming experience every time they used the space. I used lighter tones and natural stone to create a pair of custom double sinks, luxurious yet understated. A built-in bath, set within stone, adds another layer of quiet elegance. The use of Moleanos Beige limestone throughout gave the room a sense of simplicity, warmth, and humility.
One of my favourite material is Tadelakt and used it here on to the walls and celings. It creates a continuous, seamless feel that has a subtle richness that paint could never quite achieve. It also allowed the sloping ceiling to flow effortlessly into the walls, enhancing the soft, cocooning atmosphere of the space.
To maintain a calm look, I designed a separate WC area behind a reeded glass door. This added texture and privacy while keeping the main bathroom feeling open and beautiful.
Storage is another element I always prioritise. Bathrooms can easily feel cluttered with everyday products, so I incorporated plenty of hidden storage. A wooden vanity adds warmth and natural texture, while mirrored wall units provide extra space without overwhelming the design.
All in all, I loved creating this ensuite. It feels luxurious yet humble, natural, nurturing, and perfectly suited to those quiet morning and evening moments.

Creating a personal retreat - calming master ensuite
Bathrooms hold a unique place in our homes, serving as private sanctuaries where we can retreat and rejuvenate. I strongly believe that they should evoke a sense of nurturing and calmness. Creating a space where you can unwind within your own home is essential, and the bathroom often becomes the perfect haven for moments of solitude and self-care.
Personally, I am drawn to darker colours in bathrooms as they create a cocoon-like atmosphere that enhances relaxation. In one of my new-built home projects, I had the opportunity to create a stunning master ensuite. Situated on the top floor with large windows framing lush greenery, the space felt truly special. The surrounding greenery added a sense of serenity and natural beauty to every moment spent in the bathroom.
The rich, dark-toned walls and smoked oak contributed to the cosy ambience, enveloping the space in warmth and comfort. Every aspect of the design was carefully curated to create a nurturing environment where one could fully unwind and recharge.
What do you think? Can you imagine yourself unwinding in this calming ensuite?
