So today I went to see both August: Osage County and 12 Years a Slave, and as I'm sure you know Benedict Cumberbatch is in both. He only has about 20 minutes of screen time in each movie but blows you away even in that short amount of time. It was really interesting to hear him speak with an American southern accent in August: Osage County and especially wonderful to hear him sing. If you get a chance you really should check out these movies! Now, I am off to watch the TV mini-series To the Ends of the Earth starring.... You guessed it, Benedict Cumberbatch.
Brief thoughts on 12 Years a Slave and a probably unpopular opinion about Master Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch)
Just saw 12 Years a Slave...... I don't even know where to start. It was great! Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender were positively flawless! The whole cast was flawless. Question though, (I am a huge Cumberbatch fan btw), was I the only one who came out of the theater hating Master Ford more than Master Epps? Seriously, *SPOILER ALERT* Solomon TOLD him that he was a free man, and stupid Ford was like, "Nope. You can't tell me that. I've got a debt!" If he would've listened, Solomon might have gained freedom faster and would not have suffered years of abuse at the hands of Epps. *SPOILER ALERT OVER* I know, some people are like, "What about those guys who sold Solomon into slavery in the first place?" I will give you that one! Those bastards! But to those who say "No way Ford is worse than Epps!". Okay, yes, Epps was an evil bastard, HOWEVER! Epps made it clear that he didn't look at his slaves as human beings, he looked at them as "Property". I don't know if Ford saw his slaves as human beings, I'm just saying that he knew who Solomon was, and did nothing to help him. The minute Solomon confessed to Ford was the minute that he was forcing Ford to see him as a human being and Ford completely ignored it and sold him again, after he had just learned that he had no right to do so.
One more thing, Paul Dano has been AWESOME this year. Someone get that man an award.... Actually, this whole movie should win and award. Everything was amazing, EVEN THE MUSIC!!!
