The Masters is Elementary, My Dear Watson
At 35 years old, Bubba Watson has won the Masters for the second time in three years, posting a total score of eight under par for the weekend.
Watson came into the final round tied with 20-year-old Jordan Spieth and the latter took a two shot lead after birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. Spieth, making his Masters debut, then went on to bogey both eight and nine, while Watson birdied those two holes to secure a two shot lead before the back nine and Watson never looked back. History was not on Spieth’s side as he sought to become the youngest winner at the Masters and the first Masters rookie to win since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.
Jonas Blixt of Sweden, also playing in his first Masters and shooting under par in all four rounds, finished the tournament at five under par with Spieth and 50-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez finished in fourth at four under par.
Watson becomes the first man to win at Augusta in two out of three years since Phil Mickelson won in 2004 and ’06. In an interview for the tournament, Watson said he joked with last year’s winner Adam Scott about giving Scott the green jacket in 2013 and getting it put back on him from Scott this year.
The next major will be the U.S. Open from Pinehurst, North Carolina, June 12th-15th.
