Serena Tops Venus to Set Open Era Major Record
Serena Williams has set the record for most Grand Slam championships in the Open Era with a 6-4, 6-4 win over her older sister, Venus, to win the 2017 Australian Open. Serena takes her 23rd major title and pulls ahead of Steffi Graf. Margaret Court has 24 major wins for the most all-time.
In their first meeting in a major final since the 2009 Wimbledon, Serena asserted herself in the second set to put away her big sister. The younger Williams is now 17-11 all-time against Venus. The latter appeared in her first Grand Slam final after the aforementioned ’09 Wimbledon, marking the longest stretch between appearances in a major in Open Era history.
The first set was a little erratic with the first four games of the match all being breaks of serve. Serena broke Venus three times in the set. In the second set, Serena broke Venus to take a 4-3 lead and eventually ran to the finish line for the championship, which is Serena’s seventh Australian Open title.
This win gives Serena the number one ranking in the world as she overtakes last year’s Australian Open and U.S. Open champion, Angelique Kerber. The next major title for Serena to overtake Court’s record will be the French Open which will be contested May 28-June 10 at Roland Garros in Paris.

Patriots March to Another Super Bowl
For the seventh time in the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era, the New England Patriots will play in the Super Bowl following a 36-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. The game wasn’t in doubt from halftime on as the Pats turned a 17-9 score at the break into a rout.
Brady (32/42, 384 pass yards, 3 TDs) was hot early as he threw two TD passes to Chris Hogan in the first half. This was the ninth postseason game in which “Tommy Terrific” passed for three or more touchdowns in a playoff game, a mark Brady shares with Joe Montana for most all-time. Hogan playing in his second career postseason game caught nine passes for 180 yards with the two scores. He and Julian Edelman combined for the most receiving yards by a duo in Conference Championship game history.
It was a night of tough sledding for Mike Tomlin’s Steelers. After their first TD of the game, Chris Boswell missed an extra point. With the score 17-6 late in the first half, Roethlisberger threw what seemed to be a touchdown pass to TE Jesse James. After review, that call was overturned leaving Pittsburgh with a 1st and Goal from the one-yard line. D’Angelo Williams, who filled in for an injured Le’Veon Bell (groin), lost yards on the next two plays and the Steelers eventually kicked a field goal to go to the half trailing 17-9. Only a late fourth quarter TD from Roethlisberger made the score a little closer. The Steelers will regret not being able to get much pressure on Brady and avoid making crucial mistakes.
Belichick (four titles) breaks a tie with Don Shula by taking the Patriots to a seventh Super Bowl. They will face the Atlanta Falcons in the same stadium where New England beat another NFC South team, Carolina, in Super Bowl 38 in 2004. Super Bowl 51 will be in two weeks with kickoff scheduled around 5:30 PM Central on FOX.

Falcons Fly to Super Bowl
For the second time in franchise history, the Atlanta Falcons have reached the Super Bowl with their 44-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.
In a game where most people expected to see a lot of scoring, the Falcons scored the first 31 points in shell shocking the Packers. Atlanta imposed their will from the opening kickoff as they scored on their first drive of the game on a Matt Ryan improvised two-yard TD flip pass to Mohamed Sanu. Ryan passed for four touchdowns and 392 yards with two of those TDs going to Julio Jones (nine catches, 180 yards).
After a Mason Crosby field goal miss in the first quarter and a successful Matt Bryant field goal, Packers fullback Aaron Ripkowski fumbled deep in Atlanta territory for a touchback that ultimately started the downfall for the NFC North Champion, Packers.
Each time the Falcons converted third downs which led to scores, it deflated the Packers morale and their chances to make a ball game of things. Aaron Rodgers threw for three TDs, but they were all after Atlanta put the game away after scoring early in the third quarter. This season comes to a screeching halt for Mike McCarthy’s Green Bay squad as they were decimated by injuries all year long.
The last time the Falcons played for a world championship was in January of 1999 when they were quarterbacked by Chris Chandler and Jamal Anderson was the leading rusher. That game in Miami was a loss to the Denver Broncos. This year’s version of the “Dirty Birds” led by Dan Quinn will face the winner of the Steelers-Patriots AFC Championship Game. Super Bowl LI will be on FOX from Houston, Texas with the kickoff scheduled around 5:30 PM Central Time.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 18
As we get set to usher in a brand new year, we want to remind you all to be safe, be blessed and we thank you for your support of IN THE ZONE Sports. There were a lot of ups and downs in 2016 with thrilling championships and unfortunate deaths. It’s difficult to think of another year where we lost so many and the impacts of those who passed on. There’s much to celebrate heading into 2017 and that will not be understated.
Speaking of celebrations, this weekend will give us our fair share as two more teams will clinch playoff spots in the NFL and two teams will be one step closer to a National Championship in College Football. The pros have some moving and shaking to be decided as far as seeds, home field advantage and the champions of the AFC West and NFC North. The AFC’s playoff field is set and we know Pittsburgh (the AFC North champs) are the #3 seed. We know the #1 seed in the NFC is the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants will play at a division champion in the Wild Card round. The final regular season game pits the Packers at the Lions and the last time Aaron Rodgers threw a pass at Ford Field, all Hail Mary broke loose.
Atlanta and Glendale, Ariz. are the two cities the College Football universe will be focused on for the Chick-fil-a Peach Bowl and the Playstation Fiesta Bowl. Defending champion, Alabama looks to knock off Chris Petersen’s Huskies and a very intriguing matchup between Ohio State and Clemson is the second College Football Playoff National Semifinal game. Our picks contest has been tight, especially between the Epting brothers. Donny holds a five game lead down the stretch. Here are this week’s picks.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 17
The countdown is on to the end of 2016 and the season of giving culminates with Christmas Day. From all of us to all of you, we wish you a very Merry Christmas leading up to the New Year. Donny is holding on to a four-game lead over his big brother, Willie, in our picks standings as both men went 19-9 last week and Dwayne was just a game off the pace with an 18-10 mark.
This weekend is a little different with Christmas Day being on Sunday which means the majority of the NFL games are being played on Saturday. The Patriots look to clinch home field throughout the AFC with a win and a Raiders loss. The AFC South is still up for grabs between the Texans, Titans and yes, Dwayne’s Colts. In the AFC North, bottom line for the Steelers, they beat the Ravens on Christmas Day and the division is theirs. The AFC West is still to be decided between the Raiders, Chiefs and even the Broncos. The defending champs are on the ropes, but can get off the mat if they can conquer the Chiefs in K.C. on Christmas night. Playoff possibilities exist for a myriad of teams in the AFC between the Dolphins, the runner-up in the AFC North and whoever doesn’t win the AFC West.
The NFC North comes down to the last two weeks of the year as Packers host the Vikings before going to Detroit to finish out the year. Speaking of Detroit, they’ll play at the Cowboys on Monday night. Congratulations to the Cowboys on being the top seed in the NFC and winning the East. There’s a whole lot to sort out to determine who can snag the Wild Cards in the NFC.
Lots of good games to see this weekend and the college bowls are heating up as well. In the season of giving, here are our gifts to you and our picks.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 16
It’s the most wonderful time, of the year. The kids are out of school (or getting out soon) for winter break, some retail stores are racking up in sales (or from online sales) and the fellas of IN THE ZONE Sports wish you all a very safe and joyous holiday season. Willie is in the wishing mode as he has fallen four games behind Donny for top dog in the PICKS, PICKS, PICKS standings. After a 12-4 week, Donny is trying to reclaim the throne he lost last season and go for three titles in four years. Just like the Seahawks with the NFC West title. Congrats to those guys!
This week’s schedule includes bowling. Yes, bowling! Bowl games get underway with the Celebration Bowl and the season will culminate with the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 9. There may be a lot of bowl games with names and sponsorships we don’t know or understand, but hey, it’s football.
In the NFL, Matthew Stafford, and his injured finger, travel to MetLife to face Eli and the Giants. Aaron Rodgers, and his hurt calf, square off with their rivals, the Bears in Chicago. It’s a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game when the Patriots do battle with the Broncos. There will be some obvious differences in this game from last year. Finally on Sunday, Jameis Winston makes his Sunday Night Football against the NFC East leading Cowboys. A win gives the Cowboys the path to the Super Bowl through Arlington. Who are we going with this week? Here are our picks.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 15
We’re a couple of weeks from Christmas and this has indeed been the season of giving. Donny put up a 17-3 record last week to give himself a three-game lead over Willie in the picks standings. Dwayne was only a game back at 16-4 and the aforementioned Willie Jr. was 14-6. Football has given us an eventful fall and Saturday night, one young man will hear his name called as the newest member of the Heisman Trophy club. Prior to the Heisman presentation, Navy and Army will meet again for the 117th time with the Midshipmen bringing in a 14-game win streak vs. the Cadets.
The NFL season has come down to the “nitty-gritty” and the first team to clinch a playoff spot is the Dallas Cowboys. With a win in MetLife Stadium vs. the Giants, Dallas will claim the NFC East title and possibly a first-round bye if the Lions fall to the Bears and the Packers can upend the Seahawks. Speaking of Seattle, they can clinch the NFC West if they beat Green Bay and Miami tops Arizona. If Arizona beats Miami and the Patriots beat the Ravens on Monday night, then the Patriots will win the AFC East. Got it? There will be a quiz later. That’s a joke, but the picks below are far from a joke.

(1) Alabama vs. (4) Washington
-AND-
Fiesta Bowl, December 31
(2) Clemson vs. (3) Ohio State
The B1G Conference champion, Penn State, finished fifth in the final rankings and Michigan, who beat Penn State by 39 points, is sixth. We will update all New Year’s Six bowls later.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 14
We don’t know about you, but doesn’t it feel like the football season just began? It is the start of the month of December and football is going to be going away soon. In the meantime, there’s a lot to play for. A whole lot to play for with ITZ’s contest as Willie and Donny are dead even for the season with 166-110-2 records. Dwayne’s got some time to make up the nine game difference, but time is running short.
College football has reached the very end of the regular season and when next week starts, we will know the four teams who will play for the National Championship. The Big 12 is yet to be decided with Bedlam as Oklahoma State faces the Sooners in Norman. Don’t be surprised if the light bulbs on the scoreboard are lit up…a lot.
The conference title games to be contested include: the MAC as Western Michigan looks to clear another hurdle on their way to a New Year’s Six bowl game, Washington collides with Colorado in the Pac-12 with the Huskies seemingly having a CFP spot at stake, Conference USA with the guys from Ruston (Louisiana Tech) looking to top Western Kentucky, and Navy hosting Temple for the American championship. The two teams who squared off in the first two SEC Championship Games are doing it again for the 25th title game and the second straight year in Alabama and Florida, a rematch for the Mountain West title from a couple of weeks ago with San Diego State and Wyoming going head-to-head following the Cowboys one-point win in the first contest. DeShaun Watson and Clemson are seeking their second straight ACC Championship, but face a test in the Virginia Tech Hokies and the two squads ranked sixth and seventh in the latest CFB Playoff standings, Wisconsin and Penn State, hook up in Indianapolis for the B1G title.
In the pro ranks, some interesting AFC vs. NFC matchups are on the docket for the week with the Chiefs looking to ground the Falcons and the Packers hosting the AFC South leading Texans. Also, two of the first three QBs taken in the 2004 NFL Draft will face off as Eli Manning and the Giants will tangle with Big Ben and the Steelers. It’s time to start fighting for divisions and Wild Card spots in December so pay extra attention to the Lions at Saints, Dolphins at Raiders and Bills at Raiders. Who do we believe will win? Take a peek at our picks.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 13
From Dwayne, Willie and Donny, we want to wish everyone a safe, joyous and Happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful for all of the readers of our website, listeners of the IN THE ZONE Sports Show on the Big Game Christian Sports Network, and all of our loved ones and friends who support us.
We are also thankful for good football this weekend. Those who play on campus have reached the last week of the regular season (except the Big 12) and there are quite a few matchups that have major implications on not only conference championships, but the College Football Playoff. Here are the reasons to watch games in these conferences:
American – In the East Division, Temple and South Florida head into the weekend with 6-1 records. The Owls pummeled the Bulls, 46-30 in October and if Temple beats East Carolina Saturday night, then it’s the school in Philadelphia headed to the championship game. An Owls loss and a South Florida win at home vs. Central Florida will put USF in the title game. Navy has clinched the West.
ACC – The Coastal Division will be decided between North Carolina and Virginia Tech. The two teams played earlier in the season with the Hokies winning in Chapel Hill. V-Tech controls their own destiny to Charlotte with a win vs. Virginia. UNC needs a win Friday vs. N.C. State, plus a Hokies loss to claim the division. A Tar Heel loss will give VT the berth in the championship before they take the field vs. Virginia on Saturday. Clemson won the Atlantic Division with last week’s win at Wake Forest.
B1G – Michigan wins the East Division with a win over Ohio State. If Ohio State wins, they’ll need Penn State to lose to Michigan State to win the East. If neither of these happen, the Nittany Lions go to Indianapolis. A Wisconsin win over Minnesota not only claims Paul Bunyan’s axe, but sends the Badgers to the title game in Indianapolis with the West Division championship. If Nebraska beats Iowa Friday and Minnesota beats Wisconsin, then the Cornhuskers will represent the West Division.
MAC – The winner of Toledo vs. Western Michigan will win the West Division and face Ohio in Detroit for the league title.
Pac-12 – In the North, it’s simple. The winner of the Apple Cup in Pullman, Wash. between Washington and Washington State will be the division champ. The South is a little more difficult, but only if Colorado can’t beat Utah. A Buffaloes win sends CU to Santa Clara. If Utah wins, USC will win the division by virtue of their win over Colorado earlier in the season.
In the FCS ranks, it’s Grambling vs. Southern in the 43rd edition of the Bayou Classic in New Orleans. The Tigers and Jaguars are both 8-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play and the winner will face Alcorn State in the league title game, Saturday, December 3 in Houston. The FCS playoffs also get underway this week as the 24-team field will matriculate down to the title game in Frisco, TX on Saturday, January 7. The North Dakota State Bison are aiming for their sixth consecutive championship.
Switching over to the pros, each game on Thanksgiving has important ramifications in both leagues. The winner of Minnesota at Detroit will be in first place in the NFC North, Washington looks to attempt to make a race of the NFC East as they battle Dallas who is going for a 10-game win streak and the Steelers and Colts want to make a push at a Wild Card spot in the AFC. Sunday’s action has the Falcons hosting the disappointing Cardinals, the Panthers in Oakland to face the AFC West leading Raiders and the other two teams in the West with 7-3 records square off in Denver as the Chiefs and Broncos renew acquaintances.
Enjoy your turkey, dressing, desserts and our picks for the week. Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 12
Hands down, we are coming off the best weekend of football so far this season. Hey, even the TV ratings for the NFL can back up that claim as they finally were up. Chaos is also up in College Football after the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th ranked teams all fell a week ago. In the NFL, there was one frantic finish after another highlighted by the Broncos thrilling win vs. Saints, Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys pendulum swinging 4th quarter rally at Pittsburgh and the Seahawks “upset” win in New England. Speaking of pendulum swings, Willie Jr. has found himself in a tie for first with his little brother, Donny after the best weekend of the season. Unlike the contests between the Seahawks and Cardinals and Bengals and Redskins from earlier in the season that finished in ties, we will break ours.
On the schedule this week is a makeup game between Florida and LSU with this one being moved to Baton Rouge due to Hurricane Matthew. The other two contests featuring ranked teams going head-to-head are in the Pac-12 and the Big 12, respectively. Luke Falk and Washington State battle the Buffaloes of Colorado in Boulder. That’s the 1oth ranked (College Football Playoff) Colorado Buffaloes. They hope to burn couches in Morgantown, West Virginia with Oklahoma taking on the Mountaineers in primetime. In the NFL, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys hope to extend their winning streak to nine as they welcome in Terrell Suggs and the Ravens. Also, a battle of birds will take flight in Seattle with the Eagles and Seahawks squaring off and on Monday Night it’s Viva La Mexico as the Texans and Raiders will tangle in Mexico City.
This week’s schedule will have an uphill climb trying to match the entertainment value from last week. Who do we have winning? Here are our picks.

The Brand New CFB Playoff Rankings
In a crazy week where the second, third, fourth, eighth and ninth ranked teams all suffered defeats, the latest College Football Playoff rankings reflect a whole lot of moving and shaking. Defending champion Alabama still has a stranglehold on the #1 spot, but how does the rest of the top 10 look?
1. Alabama (10-0) 2. Ohio State (9-1) 3. Michigan (9-1) 4. Clemson (9-1) 5. Louisville (9-1; lost to #4 Clemson) 6. Washington (9-1) 7. Wisconsin (8-2; has lost to Michigan and Ohio State) 8. Penn State (8-2; beat Ohio State) 9. Oklahoma (8-2) 10. Colorado (8-2; lost to #13 USC)
Notables: 11. Oklahoma State (8-2) 12. Utah (8-2; beat USC) 13. USC (7-3) 14. West Virginia (8-1; plays Oklahoma 11/19) 20. Boise State (9-1; highest ranked Group of 5 team) 22. Washington State (8-2)

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 11
As we have celebrated Veteran’s Day, we want to say thank you to all of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Your defense of our nation goes a long way in what we do everyday. That includes PICKS, PICKS, PICKS from IN THE ZONE Sports. Last week, Willie and Donny tied with a 16-8 record and Dwayne was right there posting a 15-9 record. The Captain still holds the lead in the standings, but Willie is only three games back.
The schedule this week includes another Pac-12 showdown between USC at Washington as both teams are ranked and the Huskies have entered the top four of the CFB Playoff rankings. The #3 Michigan Wolverines are in Iowa City to face an upset-minded Iowa Hawkeyes squad in the B1G. The NFL features the defending champion Broncos in New Orleans to battle the Saints while the Falcons fly up to Philadelphia to play their bird family brethren Eagles. There are also two Super Bowl rematches as the Cowboys and Dak and Zeke square off against Big Ben and the Steelers and on Sunday Night, the Seahawks get a shot at revenge against the Patriots in Foxborough. Who do we think post wins this week? Take a look at our picks.

It’s the month of turkey, dressing, stuffing and family. Welcome to November football and we are here to make our selections for another week of PICKS, PICKS, PICKS. Donny is still in the lead for the season after posting a 17-6-1 record last week. Yes, the one is for another tie. What the heck is a tie? Willie came in with a strong 15-8-1 mark and Dwayne was 11-10-1. A tie.
This week, the featured College Football matchups are Alabama at LSU and Nebraska at Ohio State and the NFL features Dak and the Cowboys in “Believeland” to take on the Browns. It is Luck vs. Rodgers as the Colts are in Lambeau to take face off with the Packers and welcome to the primetime spotlight to the Oakland Raiders as they host the World Champion Broncos on Sunday Night Football. Curse No More! Cubs Win the World Series
In one of the more memorable title runs and season finales in recent memory, the Chicago Cubs defied the odds and 108 years of bad luck to win Game 7 of the World Series with an 8-7, 10 inning win over the Cleveland Indians.
The Cubs had leads of 5-1 and 6-3 until Aroldis Chapman gave up a tying home run to Rajai Davis in the bottom of the 8th. Neither team scored in the ninth and then then the tenth inning was delayed by rain. Once play got going, the Cubs attacked Indians P Bryan Shaw and Ben Zobrist’s double scored Albert Almora to give Chicago the lead. Miguel Montero’s single plated Anthony Rizzo to make the score 8-6. Carl Edwards Jr. gave up a run scoring single to Davis and the Indians were unable to push across the tying run as Mike Montgomery retired Michael Martinez to end the game.
The “Northsiders” trailed the series 3-1 after four games and become only the sixth team to rally from that deficit to win the world championship. The last team to accomplish the feat was the 1985 Kansas City Royals when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dexter Fowler (3 for 5) got the scoring started right out of the gate with a lead off solo home run off Corey Kluber, who was pitching his third game in nine days. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks surrendered a run in the bottom of the third inning on a Carlos Santana single which brought in Coco Crisp. In the top of the fourth, Chicago got two more runs off Kluber and then chased the 2014 Cy Young Award winner from the game on Javier Baez’s solo homer to make the score 4-1 in the top of the fifth. Anthony Rizzo brought home Kris Bryant (1 for 4, two runs) with a run scoring hit off the mostly unhittable Andrew Miller to put the Cubs up 5-1.
The Indians scratched back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch by Jon Lester (relieved Hendricks). Then in the top of the sixth, David Ross who is 39-years-old and retiring after the season, homered off Andrew Miller to straightaway center field to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Cubs. Lester (3 innings pitched) gave way to Chapman who proceeded to allow the two-run tying homer by Davis.
Joe Maddon’s team showed resilience in the final two series when they rallied from a 2-1 series deficit to win four in a row against the Dodgers and then taking the final three in the World Series. The Indians are still in search of that elusive championship with the franchise’s last coming in 1948.

PICKS, PICKS, PICKS - Week 9
We learned last week that a tie in an NFL game still does exist, especially when kickers miss chip shot field goals to win the game in overtime. Who says we’re still bitter about it? We press on to a new week of PICKS, PICKS, PICKS and the slate is filled with some great matchups.
The college kids have three games in which each team is ranked highlighted by the Pac-12 showdown between Washington and Utah. Don’t be surprised if we see a rematch later on this season in the Pac-12 Championship Game. Also, the B1G takes center stage in primetime with Nebraska facing off in raucous Madison against the Badgers and the ACC features Clemson in Tallahassee to battle Florida State.
“The Shield” features an AFC East contest in which the Patriots look for payback against the Bills (this time, TB12 is in uniform for New England). The day gets started with Washington squaring off against the Bengals in London as there’s a game there for the second straight Sunday. Two teams in the NFC who don’t play each other much will go head-to-head as the Seahawks will be in ‘Nawlins’ to face the Saints and the Falcons play host to Rodgers and the Packers. The lights on Sunday night will be bright as two rookie QBs do battle with Carson Wentz’s Eagles opposing Dak Prescott and the Cowboys. We’ve got some great ones to choose from this week, take a look at our picks.
