Tokyo officially has an evil governor
When my friend sent me a link to this article (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/07/tokyo-women-sex-strike-yoichi-masuzoe) and I read it, I slapped my own forehead harder than I had ever smacked it. Especially when I read his quote: “Women are not normal when they are having a period… You can’t possibly let them make critical decisions about the country during their period such as whether or not to go to war.” I have to admit I burst out into laughter. I mean come on, for real? I also laughed from the irony of it all: a close-minded idiot making a ridiculous, over-generalized statement about women…in the 21st century, at that.
Well, I guess in his defense, I have made numerous terrible decisions whilst on my period. I’ve eaten a box of chocolates that resulted in a stomachache—and I’ve done this several times, thanks to my raging period that makes me irrational and he might even argue, beastly.
Let’s just ignore the fact that Japan only has a defense army and can’t really even make decisions about war, but touché, Mr. Masuzoe, touché.
Anyway, so I sort of laughed this whole thing off, I mean there are crazy politicians everywhere, right? Even in the states, there are radical politicians who believe in crazy anti-feminist things, but they never really get too powerful so we can just sort of laugh at them and pat their heads for trying.
Except I found out today that he has been elected for the governor of Tokyo. I also learned that while most of the Japanese public is still very anti-nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster, he is going to fully support the reopening of nuclear plants so that Tokyo can have all of its electricity back.
All I can say is that I’m scared for poor Tokyo. Imagine being represented by a man who thinks women should never have political power? A city as big as Tokyo. Wow, just wow.
I’m not sure what the people of Tokyo will do now. I know he obviously had a huge anti-campaign: over 3,000 women went on a “sex-strike” so that people wouldn’t vote for him, but unfortunately that didn’t seem to be very effective. It just shocks me to think that a man like him could get such a high position in society, when there are plenty of others who are able to think more openly.
