I've been digging through screengrabs from Dishonored and there's something I can't figure out. I have no idea if the Whalers' jackets' undersleeves are attached to the short sleeve, or if they're like those pull-on sleeves people wear when cooking. I'm trying to make a pattern for the coat, but the sleeves are kicking my butt.
I’ve been assuming that they’re wearing some sort of long sleeved jacket under that leather coat, but I dunno really. The short sleeves on the leather coat are just really weird tbh..then again it looks like their gloves would reach all the way up there if they didn’t have them rolled up like that.
So maybe they need to be like that so that you can get the gloves all the way up? Which I’m assuming means that you’ll be elbow-deep in whale oil if you work at a refinery.
That doesn’t really answer the question of the undersleeves tho..but I suspect that they’ll forever remain a mystery. Honestly tho, either option probably works as long as it just looks right.

I, uhm. Read ‘Dad’ as 'Daud’ and thought you were talking about Daud from Dishonored and was confused about why a grouchy old mercenary was with you…
rofl... (late) lunch with Daud probably would have been much more entertaining.

You’ll enjoy Pollan’s book, then! It’s definitely US-centric, but he makes sure to describe in detail that all of these plants are NOT native to the US/Europe and how they played pivotal roles in their regions of origin.
Sweet! I have a lot of books to get through, but once I hit my Science list that will be at the top.

Ugh, his ‘acolytes’ are so aggravating. Some of the most pretentious, self-absorbed people I’ve ever come across. Even Guns, Germs, and Steel makes me want to set the planet on fire, and that one SHOULD have been right up my alley.
Guns, Germs, and Steel is what introduced me to him; I was on the badhistory subreddit looking for book recommendations and I saw a great breakdown of why it’s just full of utter shit. His chapter on the Spanish and Mesoamerican cultures is so fucking racist and colonialist it’s unsettling. I would actually really love to read more about how agriculture played a part in civilization, but not like that.

There’s a movie?? I need to look that up. Also, speaking as an anthropologist, Jared Diamond is /shit/. There’s an entire course in my department devoted to tearing his book ‘Collapse’ to pieces.
Girl, what, how did you not know there was a movie version? It’s animated for the most part, but there is live action bits in it. I watched it a few years ago with tanngnjostrs (I saw you liking that other post, bb <3).
Yesss YESSSSSS hearing that there’s a course dedicated to ripping Jared Diamond a new one brings me so much joy. From a history perspective I just, ugh, fucking christ. He has a seriously irritating following, too.

BOOKS, OKAY. The Phantom Tollbooth, the Old Kingdom series, but most importantly The Botany of Desire. It’s also a PBS show on Netflix. It talks about the origins of four domesticated plants and deals a lot with agricultural issues and human nature.
I saw the movie version of The Phantom Tollbooth, added the Old Kingdom series, and I’m kind of intrigued by The Botany of Desire. I’ll definitely look for it on Netflix since I’m looking for an alternative to Jared Diamond and his bullshit.
