Mateo was born in a room filled with family, despite the doctor’s request that only the father be present. And this would go on to describe the rest of his life as well: constantly surrounded by a loud, numerous, and loving family. Both of his parents were first generation American citizens and had grown up in a robust community, and after making their own life in Maine, had made one for themselves as well, so their children could grow up the way they had, surrounded by ‘family’ (it was a loosely used term, everyone from far flung cousins to neighbors to especially beloved mailmen could earn the term of ‘family’). His childhood was spent in a neighborhood with an open door policy, kids running from one house to the other, coming home only when the streetlights came on.
His father had started a small construction company, which his mother also worked at, and they were the type to help a person out and worry about payment later. Many times Matty could recall a neighbor calling with a dire need to have a hole in a roof fixed, or a beam replaced, but didn’t have the funds. But Mr. Perez would still show up, early the next morning and do the work himself, not wanting to send his men out on a job he knew might not ever pay. This is all to say, Matty grew up with an idealized sense of community, family, and duty.
Of course, while Mr. Perez’ actions were noble, nobility didn’t exactly pay the bills. And as Matty got older, spent more weekends working with his father or helping his mom in the office, he realized they were struggling a bit. He hadn’t seen it before, so blinded by ‘neighborly love’. People lending them use of their washing machine and dryers because they couldn’t afford to fix their own, his father offering to repair things for people in a barter for something that the family needed or wanted. But still, they got by, even when another mouth in the form of a little sibling was born.
Regardless, when he was old enough, Matty started picking up side jobs to help out where he could. Although, he had never told his parents, it was obvious to them that sometimes groceries would be bought without sending anyone to the market, and every once in awhile baby Perez would have a new pair of shoes, or cleats for whatever sport they were interested in that year. One of these jobs was helping Alex Aldridge demo Lucky’s when she first bought it. He was out of high school with no real intentions on going to college, and needed the extra cash. Somehow he had managed to make a good enough of an impression on Alex, that when he inquired about a gig waiting tables when the joint opened, was given it.
He really loved the place and his job, he loved the environment way more than lugging timber and building things with his father, something he felt a little guilty for, especially as the business continued to struggle. But he still put his time in with his father, knowing that family came first. But then, suddenly after the funeral of his abuelo, and the realization of his abuela’s memory troubles, while spending time in Puerto Rico for the funeral and arrangements, did Matty come to realize just how bad the business had been suffering. As his parents made the executive decision to close the business down, move back to Puerto Rico to take care of the parents they had left, and raise their youngest in their native country.
It had just been assumed that Matty would move with them as well, work once more with his father at a family friend’s construction business on the island. And the normally affable, go with the flow attitude having Matty was a bit pissed off. He loved his family, with all his heart really, but he was a little more than annoyed that he had never been consulted on what he wanted. He had started to make a real life of his own, after all. He had just been given the job of cook at Lucky’s, just started to realize what he wanted to do in life, and the last thing he wanted was to start all over. So after his parents had sent him back to Maywood to take care of all the things leftover from their arrangements…He made the bold decision to stay. His parents were heartbroken, and other than compulsory calls to check in with each other, the family didn’t speak for about a year or so. And suddenly, Matty found himself alone for the first time in his life, cut off from the community that his parents had so lovingly built. But, he realized, after Alex had offered him the room above the bar, and friends and coworkers had helped him get on his feet, that he had built a community of his own.
Sometimes he wondered if answering the ad for demo help was fate, because seven years later, he’s still at Lucky’s, only now as a cook, surrounded by people who, in his mind had all earned the ‘family’ title. Eventually, he knows he’ll leave, as he dreams of going to culinary school and opening up a place of his own. But for now, you can always find him at Lucky’s.
