Nicholas Alan Cope ≋ Material surface study
I've been feeling rusty in my digital painting skills, so I loaded up all those fun new procreate brushes and did a quick photo study:
Then I took the two main materials from that study - the blue glass and the orange grapes - and did material studies of each, where you extrapolate a new simple form from the material information in the reference.
This is an exercise from undergrad, and one I should definitely reintegrate into my usual habits - it got me studying my ref in a way I haven't in a while! super recommend if you're feeling like every surface in your paintings feels the same.

Posting my progress on being a digital painter?
So, if anyone remembers, there is an Avalon Vial that was given to Merlin by the Fisher King and I decided to make it a victim of my drawing progress.
Here is what a sample material study looks like for me. I try to take notes every time I do an in-depth dive like this, and include the brushes/process used to achieve these results consistently. It's very helpful when you forget how to render a piece of rusty metal for the 100000th time 🙃
