How to Change Material Types in KeyShot

The Material Library in KeyShot contains hundreds of preset materials. All of these are created using a KeyShot Material Type. Each Material Type contains specific settings to provide the most accurate appearance. You can see what Material Type a preset uses by double clicking a material applied to a part. For example, the Paint Gloss Black material preset uses the Paint Material Type. When working in a scene, sometimes you want to change some or all of the materials to a single Material Type.

1. Select the Parts

Select (or Ctrl-select) the parts you want to change from the Project, Scene tab. Right-click and select Material, Change Material Type.

2. Change the Material Type

This will bring up the Select Material Type window where you can select a different Material Type from the pulldown menu. When you select OK, KeyShot will apply that Material Type to all the selected parts in the model. From there you can edit and adjust the materials to fine tune the look.

I'll only be listing about a five types here, but there are many, many types of fabrics that you can use. They all have their pros and cons about them. The more you play with fabrics, the more you'll be able to decide what fabrics will work best for what costume.

Satin - A basic weave, characterized by long floats of yarn on the face of the fabric. The yarns are interlaced in such a manner that there is no definite, visible pattern of interlacing and, in this manner, a smooth and somewhat shiny surface effect is achieved. The shiny surface effect is further increased through the use of high luster filament fibers in yarns which also have a low amount of twist. A true satin weave fabric always has the warp yarns floating over filling yarns. Typical examples of satin weave fabrics include: slipper satin, crepe-back satin, faille satin, bridal satin, moleskin, and antique satin.

Personal note: Unless your character is shiny, becareful what kind of satin you get! There are some matte satins available that still give the silky feel, but doesn't have the shine that cheaper satins will give.

Taffeta - A lustrous, medium weight, plain weave fabric with a slight ribbed appearance in the filling (crosswise) direction. For formal wear, taffeta is a favorite choice. It provides a crisp hand, with lots of body. Silk taffeta gives the ultimate rustle, but other fibers are also good choices.

Personal note: Taffeta can give an interesting noise when you rub the material against itself, so be sure you're comfortable hearing such noises when before you start purchasing the material. Also, when it says "crisp" they really do mean it. Wrinkles and crickles in interesting ways.

Twill - A basic weave in which the fabrics are constructed by interlacing warp and filling yarns in a progressive alternation which creates a diagonal effect on the face, or right side, of the fabric. In some twill weave fabrics, the diagonal effect may also be seen clearly on the back side of the fabric.

Personal Note: Twill can mean several types of materials. Denim or bottom weights can also be known as twill. I'm a personal fan of getting the material, then using the wrong side so it doesn't carry the diagonal lines you sometimes see. It's heavy, breathable, and easy to clean.

Chiffon - A plain woven lightweight, extremely sheer, airy, and soft silk fabric, containing highly twisted filament yarns. The fabric, used mainly in evening dresses and scarves, can also be made from rayon and other manufactured fibers.

Personal Note: LOVE using chiffon for the light and airy affect it gives. Also nice to use as petticoat material if you're not a huge fan of Tulle.

Broadcloth - A plain weave tightly woven fabric, characterized by a slight ridge effect in one direction, usually the filling. The most common broadcloth is made from cotton or cotton/polyester blends.

Personal Note: Broadcloth can be very useful for a variety of costumes, however it's very important to keep an eye on the quality of the broadcloth. It's amazing how a $1-$2 difference per yard can make the broadcloth look very cheapy made (visible weaving, flimsy) or very sturdy (tightly woven, very stiff).
