Why don’t u want gifts? Not judging just curious
thanks for asking! (i also want to note that i don’t mean to disparage anyone who does like giving and/or receiving gifts but i couldn’t think of a less-emotionally charged word than obligatory so i do apologize)
i strongly dislike obligatory gift-giving: holidays, birthdays, milestones, etc. i find shopping for other people on a deadline pretty overwhelming, and the idea of people spending their time and money and mental energy to get me a gift that i don’t need or won’t use really stressful.
i actually *do* like spontaneous gifts of the form ‘oh i saw this and immediately thought of you’ or ‘i happened across that thing you needed’ or ‘i’m going to sneak the worst fortune cookie i have ever seen into your pocket,’ but it’s not super important to me. if i had to put a title on my love language it would be something like Wanting to See Someone for Who They Are and a lot of the norms or obligations around gift-giving kind of conflict with the individualized approach?
the gift-people and the bad-boundaries-people in my life just happen to overlap, but in my experience it’s been much* easier to go with a no gift policy (*ie years of awkwardly declining presents)
this is all rather unfortunate because i really enjoy wrapping presents and making big loopy bows :/
