Konferenz: Philology in the Making
Philology in the Making. Theories, Materialities, and Media of Reading and Writing
[May 22—24, 2017; Universität zu Köln]
The Conference presents and discusses preliminary results of a cooperation between the University of Cologne and ELTE Budapest as funded by the DAAD since 2016. This cooperation is based on two new perspectives that go along with the introduction of digital media within field of book history and philology: on the one hand, digital humanities enable us to explore new methods and contents in literary studies; on the other hand, establishing digital humanities also reminds us that traditional ?paper technologies? and close reading-procedures were also based on specific historical configurations between knowledge, media, and practice. Thus, the conference suggests a praxeological perspective on recent debates on the status of literary theory as well as on the materiality of literature. Questions the presentations are going to raise include: in what way will digital technology not only change scholarly practices within the humanities but also our notion of literary tradition, including traditional methods of reading as well as writing about literature?
