A new and yet another career tangent as a Materials Librarian has introduced me to this - Aerogel. A very strong and very light material with an appearance similar to solid smoke. It is currently used by NASA to filter space dust and is being tested by the University of Wisconsin as an agent capable of cleaning up oil and chemical spills and waste.
Pretty cool. I want to touch it.
