Mater is a comedian and a singer, with mostly joke songs, but some genuine ones too. The redneck persona is played up by a lot, including the accent, but he does still have some of that personality actually in him. [You can uh. you can probably see the inspiration here...] He's kinda uptight and surprisingly snobbish, not as charming or nice in real life as he is on stage. Nice clothes, expensive lifestyle, the works.

Lightning is a street racer, making money where he can and avoiding the police during his many illegal races... he wants to be famous one day, but he also just loves racing. He's very sweet, and somewhat naive in certain areas, a little easier to take advantage of due to how trusting he is. He considers Olive Garden fancy.

Backstory: Unfortunately there came a night where Mater got caught in the middle of one of Lightning’s races, quite literally. He ended up getting hit by his car, but thankfully he wasn't hurt. Although he was planning on suing the pants off whoever hit him, but stopped when the driver got out and ran over, asking if he was okay... there was just something about him. Mater thought he was... cute? No, that was weird. But instead of suing Lightning, he held it over his head, making him be his personal assistant or else he WOULD squeeze every penny he had out of his pockets, and tell the police. Everyone working for Mater seems to like Lightning, thinking about what a nice boy he is. Mater doesn't like all the attention he gets from this lmao

1. I've touched on this in another ask but yeah they could deviate from their typical dynamic if they were feeling something different, sometimes Mater likes stuff that makes him feel like he's in danger like kidnapping roleplays and knifeplay. I read a fic once where Lightning bent Mater over the hood of a car while he was working on it and fucked him like that and I could see them going for something like that every once in a while

2. It depends on where they are for what their dates tend to be, like if they're in Radiator Springs they'll go stargazing or go get fast food or see a drive in movie, or if they're in LA they'll go to a more fancy restaurant or maybe a club or a bar, they also just like hanging out at each other's homes. Whenever they're in LA Lightning likes to kind of parade Mater around like "ooo look at me with my handsome man over here" and Mater likes it too of course but what he really likes is to drive them wayyyy out in his truck with a blanket and maybe a few cold ones to look at the stars

3. They're a long distance couple a lot of the time so they're both kinda used to it but it still gets pretty rough. I mentioned the phone calls but they'll also just call and text for non horny reasons just sending updates throughout the day. Mater, of course, comes to all of his races [I feel like Cars 2 trying to say he didn't was total bs] whenever he can so it's not like they're always apart. They also visit a lot in the off season, Lightning mostly coming to rs but Mater sometimes making the trip to LA

4. Lightning. Lightning for sure. His ass gets straight up bitchy and mean when he goes too long without getting what he wants, and seeing Mater [and his other friends of course] become part of this eventually. If he or Mater have a busy schedule and he has to wait a long time for a phone call he will be in a BAD mood but that'll melt away when they can both finally talk. He's always the one that reaches out for whatever reason also, if he's just lonley or horny or had a bad day he'll shoot a text or try to call, but like I've mentioned when Mater starts to miss Lightning he keeps it to himself since he doesn't like being a bother. Whenever Lightning calls [which is often] he makes sure to ask about his eating habits and such to make sure he's taking care of himself

Lightning: before he realized he's gay and while he's still living in the spotlight and dealing with substance abuse and depression, he went through women like used tissues. He had a new girlfriend every other week, and he pretty much treated sex with them like any other vice he used to escape from his own thoughts. It was never really fulfilling, and was never the kind of guy to look at their faces or groan out their names. Once it was over he was usually annoyed if they decided to stick around his house, but not enough to say anything.

After he spent the night with Mater [and his dick] he thought "yeah okay maybe I was doing it wrong" and honestly after that point he started to feel fulfilled by sex and find joy in it, exploring his kinks and preferences. Another way they like to try and bridge the distance between them when Lightning is away is for Lightning to call him on the phone, and usually the later and night the more horny the reason for calling lmao. Mater will talk to him and hear the cute sounds he makes as he listens to him getting off on his voice. He likes to picture him in his mind during those calls and likes how easily he can get him off without even being there

He doesn't ever call him, since he doesn't like to be a bother, but sometimes he goes through his phone for pictures of him. Most of the time he prefers physical photos, which he makes sure get taken while Lightning visits or when he visits him

Somehow they figured out that he's got a thing for being kidnapped, so there's that. Every once in a while they'll do the old tie-him-up-threaten-him-with-a-knife-ride-his-dick roleplay. It tends to be on the non-con side but they have safewords and make sure they're both all good afterward.
