catelyn looked up from her sewing, where she’d been trying and failing to thread a needle. admittedly, she might have been dozing off, having spent most of the night stitching together winter cloaks for all of the new recruits to the northern cause. the dothraki were sorely underdressed, and those poor UNSULLIED - it would have been such a shame for their new allies to freeze to death before the dead even arrived.

“my darling sansa, I’m sure you have a THOUSAND other things to be doing - surely the lady of winterfell doesn’t have time to help your poor mother with her sewing.“

nevertheless, she smiled and made room on the bench for her daughter.

she smiles at her mother’s remarks, acknowledging the fact that she had made room for her to join her. sansa shakes her head, grabbing her own needlework to tend to. it had been far too long since the lady of winterfell had indulged in her former hobby, now being too busy planning and organizing. perhaps this would be a welcomed change of pace.  ‘ oh don’t be silly, mother. i’m more than happy to help. besides, i’d like to ask your opinion on something, if it isn’t too much trouble? ’  her eyes find her mother, catelyn’s auburn hair practically glowing from the light cast by the fireplace. sansa was often told how much she looked and acted like catelyn stark, and to her, this was the highest praise she could receive.  ‘ when father was warden of the north, did he ever make decisions you wholeheartedly disagreed with? did he heed your counsel? ’

It felt STRANGE being in Winterfell again, but there was stranger in the world. Plans and strategies had been finalized, choices made —— Theon among them when he volunteered to stay with Bran to help pay off the debt he owed. To fight for the Starks. He was resolute in doing his part alongside the men he brought with him to fight against an enemy they had never seen before. The rest of the night would be spent preparing for battle, people among themselves uttering tearful goodbyes and sharing their last suppers.

Theon observed her out of the corner of his eyes at first. The seam of his lips twitched, compressed into a tight line. Here he sat an entirely different man ( fool ) than he used to be, but the woman who approached him held herself as graceful and composed as he last remembered seeing her. Theon’s head lifted from his bowl of soup. In spite of his quietly controlled manner, his blue eyes betrayed him, exuding a gleam of shame. “ It’s the right thing to do. I owe it to your family, Lady Stark. I...I can never make amends for the things I’ve done. ” Clouds of breath mingled with the wisps of steam eddying in the night air. “ The battle plans have already been drawn. If it comes to it, there’s no one else who can better protect Bran. The Ironborn will stand behind me. ”

as catelyn packed her things to follow robb, theon, and the northern forces, there was not much she could do but worry for the sons she was leaving behind. with sansa in the south, ned beheaded, and arya gods-knew-where, it seemed absolutely imperative that the lady of winterfell should oversee the war rescue mission her eldest was leading. she’d known he’d take theon with him - that was a given. but she’d thought that pytre at least was going back to protect winterfell. when he called out to her, though, she realized that wasn’t going to be the case. “then who will protect bran and rickon? if you go south, who will watch over the little lords of winterfell?“

“You’re my mother and Robb is my sibling. It’s only right that I protect you both.” His words are HONEST and he feels as though he owes them both that much. “The North is protected by it’s people and I have no doubts that Bran and Rickon will be safe with out me here,” he couldn’t save Sansa or his father and the last thing he wanted to do was watch his mother be taken from him as well. “Please mother? Let me go with you just for a little and then I will come back... I just want to be there for you.”

             Sansa doesn’t understand what her mother is saying, having Myrcella and Joffrey and Queen Cersei around has been such a lovely time. Maybe King Robert was a bit disappointing, even if she would NEVER say it to anyone, but everyone else has been absolutely wonderful and her heart breaks at the thought that she’s gonna have to say goodbye, that they’ll leave and go back to the beautiful South and she’ll stay here after all the bards are gone… She can already feel the loneliness gnawing at her. She wants to disagree with her mother, wants to tell her how beautiful royalty is and how she wishes she could have more of them but that wouldn’t be polite so Sansa nods politely.

          ❝ Maybe. ❞  Maybe not. But she politely changes the subject.  ❝ What about my request to spend some time at Riverrun with my lord uncle and my lord grandfather, has father agreed? I think there’s a better chance of said small doses of royalty there. ❞  She smiles ever so proud of how smart she’s being, after all, small is not the same as nothing. In the North there’s very few chances that they’ll ever return and the rest of her days will all be sad and gloomy without seeing royalty ever again.

Ned looks up at the sound of Catelyn entering the room, a smile on his face when he sees her. There marriage had started as one of necessity, and they had a rough start when she came to Winterfell with their son Robb and found Jon in the nursery. As much as he wished to tell Cat the truth, tell her that he had not betrayed her, he did not fully trust that someone couldn’t be listening. Varys had known far too much when he was last in King’s Landing for Robert’s wedding.

The small child in his arms, their little Sansa, was a start to what he hoped was many, many joyful years of expanding their family. The babe was sleeping peacefully, as she had for the last hour.

Her arrival at King’s Landing had been expected, but only because of his spies. Therefore, Baelish made sure he looked his best. He combed his hair neatly and told his whores not to come out for a while. They were more than happy to oblige, of course.

Catelyn wasn’t safe inside the capitol, and Baelish knew it. So, he had his men bring her straight to his brothel. He knew she would be angry about it, but he would say it was for her own safety - which, it was.

He had loved her since the first moment he’d seen her. And seeing her walk in again with his men made him realize that her absence had made his heart grow even fonder. She was absolutely gorgeous, and he smiled, walking towards her. “Cat,” he greeted her. “How lovely to see you, my lady.” He gently took her hand and kissed it. “Welcome to the King’s Landing.”
