Matrix Chambers have invited young dancers from Dance United’s London Performance Company to feature in their Arts Festival in honour of World Refugee Day. Innovative choreographer Kwesi Johnson has created Roost, a dance piece commissioned for the occasion with music by Matt Rogers and costumes by Bettina John.
The United Nations’ World Refugee Day is observed on 20th June each year. The day is designed to draw attention to the plight of approximately 14 million refugees around the world and honours the courage, strength and determination of those forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. On this date, Matrix Arts Festival aims to use various forms of art to explore and highlight the experiences of these individuals, and of other marginalised groups in society.
‘Dance United values its partnership with Matrix Chambers. Through their continued support we have been able to commission the brilliant Kwesi Johnson to create a piece that will showcase the talents of our young dancers. We know the power of dance to transform lives – this is the core of what we do.’ Andrew Coggins MBE, Dance United Chief Executive
‘We are so delighted that the amazing work which Dance United does with vulnerable young people can be showcased at this festival and that the dancers can join us in raising awareness about the plight of refugees and asylum seekers.’ Lindsay Scott, Matrix Chambers’s Chief Executive
