August is coming to a close, but things certainly haven’t slowed down for us! We had a great weekend hanging out with our friends at MAGWest, but now we’re ramping up for PAX West. Matt, JJ, and Toni are heading up to Seattle for another big weekend, and we want to make sure you all know how to find us.

First things first, we’ll be keeping our main center of operations at a GaymerX/MidBoss table in the Diversity Lounge for all four days. We’ve printed up all kinds of rad goodies to share with you all, plus we’d just love it if you came to say hi and kept us company.

Next, a party! We’ve teamed up with our long-time collaborators, the Gay Gaming Professionals, to throw a Microsoft-sponsored bash at Kremwork. It’s on Thursday the 31st, it starts at 8pm pst, it’s free, it’s cool, so bring all of your friends and party with us! You can even RSVP and share on Facebook, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into.

Are panels your jam? Well then you should definitely come see Toni participate in The Evolution of the Gaming Industry: Fresh Voices in Gaming. That’ll be on Friday at 12pm pst, and her co-panelists are all incredible people. Make sure to get it into your calendars!

Finally, Matt will be joining so many of our pals on Sunday at 10am pst for the PAX Rumble V: The V Stands for Very Bad Video Game Wrestling. What’s going to happen? It’s hard to say. Which is to say, it’s going to be very good and you should be there. Well, very bad. But also very good. Something about a digivolution??? Matt seems very excited about it, and he says you don't want to miss it. Also, surprises?!?! 🤔 Anyway, don’t miss it!

P.S. This isn’t PAX, but you’ll also be able to catch EMi running around on the east coast at MAGLabs. Yes, she went directly from MAGWest to MAGLabs. Yes, she knows that’s bonkers. Just roll with it.

This is Matt Conn’s blog. I just posted an article about his wetlands restoration project (personal hobby) in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. His blog tells some good stories, has good photos, and links to other blogs that are pertinent to his restoration project in Louisiana.

He has a blog called "Turtle Boy and the Birds," on Blogspot. Here's the link. I'm going to spend some time reading it. I like what he's doing. One guy, doing what he can because he likes it and it's the right thing to do.

When thinking of people trying to repair their corner of the planet, those who come to mind tend to be wealthy, like Ted Turner and his prairie bison conservation efforts. But Mr. Conn’s work here in south-central Louisiana is do-it-yourself ecology: part tree-hugging, part tree-slashing, with buckets of sweat thrown in. The hours he has devoted and the thousands of dollars he has spent place his work somewhere between hobby and obsession. And, since Mr. Conn works as an environmental consultant, it is something of a busman’s holiday.

“It’s my therapy,” he said. “I’m one of those ‘society does not make any sense to me’ kind of guys. Nature does.”

Not everyone gets the satisfaction that he does from this wet, odoriferous place. His wife, Lauren Conn, who works in accounting, does not share his love of the raw outdoors. “If there’s one mosquito, it’s on me,” she said, and “I know nothing about birds.”

Worse, she said, while he was saving the planet, she was tending the children at home after his long deployment. But after reading the blog he keeps, she came around. “After reading it all, in his words, and all he did,” she said, “I was very proud of him.”
