You wiped your hands on your apron when you heard a knock on the front door, leaving your half-done cake batter behind on the counter.

You opened the door, not quite knowing who to expect, when three pairs of eyes stared back at you–the neighbours' kids. 

You tried hard to let your confusion show. “Hello boys,” you greeted them with a kind smile. “What can I do for you?” 

The oldest of the three, James, started talking. “Hello, Mrs. Crank. Is Mr. Crank home?” he asked, showing his teeth in a smile. 

You were taken aback by that question for a moment before you nodded. “He is. Why don’t you come in?” You stepped aside. “I’ll give you boys some fresh lemonade while I fetch him.” 

The boys didn’t have to be told twice and were sitting at your table only seconds later, sipping their cold lemonade. 

Meanwhile, you made your way to Charles’ study and gently knocked on the door. “Charles?” 

You heard a muffled “Come in” and opened the door. He looked up and smiled at you when you entered. “Hey darling. What is it?” He set down his pen, fixing his eyes on you. 

You returned his smile. “James and the boys are here. They’re asking for you,” you let him know. 

“Ah, yes,” he got up. “I promised them I’d teach them a bit of baseball. Arthur is quite busy, and James would like to make the team this year,” he explained while he stepped around his desk. “I should have told you, I’m sorry.” 

You only shook your head with a soft smile. “It’s okay. Nothin to be sorry for.” He gave you a quick peck on the lips before he left his stud,y and you could faintly hear him greet the boys in the kitchen. 

“Dinner will be ready in two hours,” you managed to yell after him before he left, laughing when you could hear him yell back, “I’ll be there.”
