Okay, omg.

I also ship this, just so everyone knows. All the ships are my ships.

Once again, not trying to hate, just trying to be objective.

I think River's love for the Doctor is actually one of the best developed things in new Who. Like, it's really very believable to me that she loves him, and a lot. She's actually built her entire life around him, whether or not that was her choice.

I do think that the Doctor loves River, but not in a strictly romantic sense. I think through series 5 and the first half of 6 their relationship is flirtatious rather than, you know, the epic love! of the Wedding of River Song. He finds her fun, mysterious--not knowing who she is excites him. He's all about new challenges. Her know-how about time travel, and about him, is intriguing to him. We don't see him interact with a lot of women who aren't his companions, and all companions have to learn from him before they can be anywhere near as savvy as River. But she comes in and is in charge and he's a little bit competitive with her, even. They've got a sexy little rivalry.

I was convinced by the transition between sexy River Song and very much in love Melody Pond; the writers and Alex both did their job, I think, and the result was what they wanted. I think River loves him with everything she's got.

However, in the Doctor marrying River, I didn't see that as him... I don't know, I think he CARES deeply for her, but that doesn't translate to romantic love, in this particular situation. I don't even think it was supposed to. The big conflict in that episode was her being able to sacrifice him, and what he did was mostly a way to get her to do what was necessary. The Doctor has been loved by a lot of people, romantically and platonically, and they were all willing to go to extraordinary lengths for him. The real difference with River is that she's built her entire life around him; she's nothing without him, without the TARDIS.

So... I don't know, those are some of my thoughts. There isn't really a thesis to them, I'm afraid.
