Over/Out: Bill MacKay / Matthew Lux / Ben Boye @ Bar DeVille, 5/20/14

Bill MacKay has been our friend and musical compatriot for three years on now. He met us in the cocktail lounge underground of Gilt Bar for our Trio in Curio series in 2012 and has accompanied us on a number of projects. MacKay is a critical fixture in Chicago’s folk/experimental community committing tirelessly to expressing a meditative spontaneity through his compositions and impulses. His annunciation of the 6-strings is a steady though hushed voice that’s been recognized as that of one of our city’s strongest improvisors.

He’s joined by longtime collaborator and legendary Chicago bassist Matthew Lux and Chicago luminary Benjamin Boye on keys. We welcome these three players in celebration of the Tuesdays that have come before and the expanded vision and direction of our musical presentation efforts in the city. In a matter of hours, MacKay, Lux and Boye will deliver the final performance presented by Uncanned Music at Bar DeVille—a farewell to a building but an observance of the growth of a creative musical community. We thank you for all of your support and encouragement over the past two years.

Over/Out at Bar DeVille (701 N Damen Ave, Chicago, Illinois), every Tuesday night at 10pm, vinyl selections by Joe Darling will be heard before, between, and after performances.

Beginning tonight Chicago cornetist Rob Mazurek will present his new Pulsar Quartet—featuring members of Exploding Star Orchestra—for a four night run at the Whistler.  Featuring Matthew Lux on bass (Iron and Wine, Pharoah and the Underground), John Herndon on drums (Tortoise), Angelica Sanchez on electric piano (Wadada Leo Smith's Organic and Golden Quartet), and Rob Mazurek on cornet (ESO, Sao Paulo Underground, Chicago Underground, Pharoah and the Underground, Starlicker).  The group will be workshopping and recording material for a new record on Delmark Records at this time, as well. You don't want to miss it. Exploding Star's week-long residency here last August was one of the finest things we've ever had on our stage.
