Anthology Spidertangle reviewed by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

I'm very glad this anthology exists. Whenever I'm appraising a poetry anthology I usually hope that it'll include some poetry meant to be performed, some concrete poetry, some visual poetry, etc - in other words, some poetry that expands formal parameters. Instead, we get huge collections of poetry in wch the poetry isn't much to look at when, after all, we do SEE the words written in these bks so why not factor that into the making of the poetry?! SPIDERTANGLE is an online association of Visual Poets. Their work was compiled for this bk by mIEKAL aND's Xexoxial Edition. mIEKAL is a member of the group. & why are we not likely to see their work in any Norton compilation I know of? B/c it's just a little bit too far away from any conventional notion of poetry - even post-modern poetry, even contemporary poetry. But I figure that if Visual Poets call their work poetry why not accept it on its own terms? In the Milton Klonsky edited Speaking Pictures there're picture poems presented that date from the 16th century & the Visual Poetry of SPIDERTANGLE fits into this lineage w/o necessarily referring to it. Perhaps the main poet who does refer to it is Richard Kostelanetz, a well-known anthologist, in his 2 "Intricate Infinities" wch are formally comparable to the Anonymous "Love Knots" of mid 17th century England. Otherwise, most of the work fits fairly staunchly into the 2nd half of the 20th century & the 1st decade of the 21st. Many of the contributors are folks whose work I've crossed paths w/ in such periodicals as Score, Rampike, & The Lost & Found Times. Alas, all of these fine publications are things I've gotten thru the mail by corresponding w/ the editors & are, as such, not likely to be more widely in circulation except, perhaps, in university libraries where students may never notice their existence. One isn't likely to find them crowded up against Cosmopolitan & its endless cleavage drivel. As such, when the world of correspondence began to shift from mail art to email, connections got jolted about & I lost touch w/ most of these people. This comp drives home to me how much I miss them. I got this bk by visiting mIEKAL & Camille Bacos in person in June, 2011. I was coming from screening my documentary entitled "DEPOT (wherein resides the UNDEAD of Franz Kamin)" in Minneapolis. 8 mnths later I was in Milwaukee to screen the same movie & who shd I meet for the 1st time? David Chirot, whose Visual Poems grace both the end papers & the interior of this bk. Meeting David was yet another jolt to remind me that most Mail Art networkers actually know about & care about people who the rest of the population barely notice. They network b/c they're looking for like-minded thinkers & doers. Their immediate physical environment doesn't necessarily provide this. Hence, things like the SPIDERTANGLE email list are born. This is very important to me. Anthology Spidertangle creates the place where these people meet: Geof Huth: "Visual poets are looking for the shimmering border between text and image because that is where they build their homes." Karl Young: ""Only as painted images in your books have we come to be alive in this place" - Aztec oral poem and title of set of books by Karl Young." Jefferson Hansen: "These pieces, I hope, show forth the niches and layers of language that we, to a degree, live within." To refer back to the excellent Speaking Pictures again: The 1st epigraph to its introduction reads: "Painting is mute poetry, poetry is a speaking picture. - Simonides of Ceos, sixth century B.C." & I wonder: don't people ever 'get it' that these separations are artificial & that things can be put together that were previously torn asunder? What I mean is that while the mere division of things that can be seen that use a semantic system can certainly be perceived as divisible into separate categories, this isn't absolutely 'necessary'. While I'm an analyst, & enjoy creating categories for calling attn to specific qualities, I'm also a person who can enjoy the potential amorphousness of 'reality'. & it's this amorphousness that Visual Poetry exploits & explores. In Marilyn R. Rosenberg's wonderful poem w/ a white mouse, next to a key, crossing what cd be a glyphic sketchbk, the wordly content of such sequences as: "nice mice nice lice gad gaga gag lick pick pluck poco" are as much fragments of the visual landscape as they are a semantic continuity of a more stanza-like nature. & that cd be sd about much of this SPIDERTANGLE work. These semantic units live in letterscapes & wordscapes, they're like neuronal firing patterns, they're flows of energy that might turn into sentences in someone's brain or into wordless visions in someone else's - mostly, tho, they're more likely to exist in a mindspace that's not quite neither nor.. & that's exactly where I like them. So, HELLO Reed Altemus, HELLO Matthew Stolte, HELLO John M. Bennett, HELLO Geof Huth, HELLO Grag Hill, HELLO Nico Vassilakis, HELLO Ric Royer, HELLO Bob Grumman, HELLO David Baptiste Chirot, HELLO Ross Priddle, HELLO Karl Kempton, HELLO Marilyn S. Rosenberg, HELLO Michael Basinski, HELLO C Mehrl Bennett, HELLO mIEKAL aND, HELLO Liaizon Wakest, HELLO Camille Bacos, & HELLO all the rest. It was nice to party w/ you in the world of Anthology Spidertangle where the literate need not be literal.
