Project Vengeance, Part 1

Background on Sovereign under the cut

After the events surrounding the creation of Mecha Godzilla and the subsequent rampage of the mech in Hong Kong, MONARCH launched a campaign to work with world authorities to round up the ringleaders of the Mecha Godzilla project. This included many of Apex's higher ups. By 2026, Apex was deemed officially dissolved. However, some of its more...fanatical members rallied in an underground organisation that remained largely unnoticed by the outside world, and this organisation was named Sovereign by one David John, who quickly became known as the "leader".

John believed that the Mecha Godzilla project could have been successful, if not for the inherent flaw of using an extraterrestrial life form to serve as the brain. Instead, John elected to eliminate all risk of a project going rouge by genetically engineering a series of kaiju. By 2031, two specimens were successfully grown in captivity, both created with the base of gojira and (through an unfortunate workplace incident) a comparitivley small portion of human DNA, but one was also given plant DNA, while the other was fused with geode crystals in its early development stages. This was the first of Sovereign's successful projects.

John Byrne’s Next Men, Vol. 1 # 21 Page 13 by Mike Mignola, with Colors by Matt Webb. 

This page is the first appearance of Hellboy in color. He was on the cover, and he showed up in convention programs and stuff before this. But this is the first full appearance of Hellboy. The owner of the original artwork has had it signed by Mike Mignola, Matt Webb, Ron Perlman, and David Harbour. Pretty cool.
