I recently read somewhere that Mattrex and Wolfang are apparently bitter rivals.

But why tho?

This is one of those reasons the Mavericks of Mega Man X are so much more interesting than those of the Zero and ZX games. Their lives don't revolve exclusively around the primary villains of their respective games. Even if there are some links back to Sigma or Hate or Doppler, they didn't start out as mindless slaves to evil.

Mattrex was just an illegal arms dealer who just happened to be a part of Repliforce's disaster response team, and Wolfang was just in charge of an investigation team.

But why do they hate each other? That's something I can't seem to find.

Mattrex

Mattrex, known in Japan as Burn Dinorex (バーン・ディノレックス), is an Maverick Hunter designed after the Tyrannosaurus Rex. He's one of the original eight from Megaman X5, and the drummer for the Baboonz.

Personality: Always acting in a commando-esque fashion, Mattrex was a prime candidate to be a foremost weapons expert for the Maverick Hunters. The only problem is that he had serious trust issues due to a strained relationship with both the General and Colonel of Repliforce. He agreed to join Sigma's Hunters with the caveat that he keeps his armaments in case things get out of hand. He agreed after some debate on the condition that he shares part of it to give their forces the resources necessary to protect Earth. Though grumbling a bit, Mattrex agreed. Now, he acts similarly to Hephaestus in Greek lore; building machines and gadgets for the Maverick, but actually getting some of the credit for said inventions. Not only that, but he plays in a band called the Baboonz to help take the edge off. Strengths: Ground Fire- Like a wildfire mixed with an earthquake, this wave of fiery rock appears from beneath his feet, and can overtake any enemies in his path. Heavy Armor Weaknesses: Wing Spiral- While he's certainly powerful and durable, he's vulnerable to aerial attacks.

A member of Repliforce's disaster prevention team, having been stationed at a volcanic mountain. Without Repliforce's consent he created an illegal weapons warehouse there where he stored various weapons made with magma energy. Because of this, he was one of few Repliforce's members who survived the Repliforce War. The Maverick Hunters eventually learned Mattrex stored a Booster Engine, which was necessary to power up the Space Shuttle they would use to destroy the Eurasia space colony, so X and Zero are sent there to retrieve it. However, Mattrex immediately assumed the hunters were sent there to retire him and attacked, which ultimately results on his defeat. Mattrex's fight is a tough one, due to his size and the small room to maneuver. He will jump around and spit fireballs, every now and then jumping into a wall to do a dashing attack. After he reaches half health, he will cover the floor in fire and dash to the other side, causing massive flames to erupt. His weakness is the Wing Spiral.
