In an interview with CinemaBlend, producer Matt Tolmach explained the lesson the filmmakers took from the reaction to the first film that is now informing the sequel. Tolmach: “[Fans] love that relationship. What people say all the time is the relationship between Eddie and Venom is… I just want to spend more time with those guys. And that's such a testament to Tom Hardy, who obviously played both parts. ... It's the thing you want to hear when you launch a franchise is that what works is the heart of the movie. And the heart of Venom was always the relationship between Eddie and Venom. These two characters, these two sides that had to figure out how to live together and that were somehow better together than they were separately, or more successful, and what that meant.” Sometimes the biggest lesson about a film isn’t what didn’t work but what did. Audiences want more of the interaction between Eddie Brock and Venom, the banter, the insults, and the realization that ultimately they are better together than apart. And that has been further reinforced by the feedback the filmmakers have received. On a possible R-rated Venom2, Tolmach pointed at the success of The Joker: “You always have to think about [it], now that that works. Having said that, our movie worked really well. ... So it isn't like suddenly everybody's considering what to do with the rating. … I think what Joker does is it tells you that you can succeed. For a very long time, that was the narrative. And Deadpool sort of wrestled that to the turf, and then Logan, but for a long time, that was considered totally forbidden. … I think it's the greatest thing in the world that R-rated movies are being embraced by massive audiences.
