What do you like about Angels in America? I didn't like it when we took it up during my undergrad. It was just too strange for my taste, so I want to know someone else's point of view (other than my own and my classmates'). :)

Fun story: my parents and I saw the play a couple of months ago in a theatre in Amsterdam, and when it was over, my dad turned to me and said: “well, I didn’t understand any of it, but that was bloody fantastic.” Which is exactly how I felt when I first read the play.

Angels In America is not an easy read by any means. It is very complex and very dense, with many layers and many references. It requires your full attention and still most of it will inevitable go over your head. I have read it many times now, I have written essays about it, I’ve given a presentation about it… And I’m still not quite sure that I get it.

And yet.

This play has so much to offer, because it is about everything. It’s about history, about human nature, about Great Journeys, about hope, about fear, about change, about chaos, about Theories, about prejudice, about loneliness, about family, about community, about religion, about identity, about globalisation, about roots, about love, about politics… About what it means to be alive.

Angels In America is about change, about movement, about the inability to stand still, and this is reflected in the experience of reading and seeing the play itself. It is never the same because you are never the same. You get something different from it each time because you’re different each time.

Kushner shows us that our world is forever in flux, for better or for worse. The relentless and inevitable course of history and the disappearing of the old may be frightening, but there is also hope, the possibility that the change will be for the better:

I’ve lived through such terrible times and there are people who live through much worse. But you see them living anyway. […] Death usually has to take life away. I don’t know if that’s just the animal. I don’t know if it’s not braver to die, but I recognize the habit; the addiction to being alive. So we live past hope. If I can find hope anywhere, that’s it, that’s the best I can do. It’s so much not enough. It’s so inadequate. But still, bless me anyway. I want more life.
