spending time in the sheriff's office was not harriet's favorite way to pass a work day. it often meant that there was a mountain of paperwork that needed to be answered for. how tacky. how boring.
the only prospect which appealed to her was the chance to interact with those who did not otherwise make frequent appearances in her social set. the whitlock-holmes provided just the right amount of scandal, even if one of them tried to avoid it.
