#Repost @emilyforgot @download.ins --- So by now we can probably all agree that yesterday’s black square had some issues. Here’s the content I had prepared but didn’t post. Yes it’s more art and design which might feel like a frivolous thing to be posting right now but when @sukrachand asked why there weren’t more black voices in design, I decided to investigate this uncomfortable question . Today’s newsletter will share some black voices from the past and some from the present, it’s a small start but I look forward to sharing and celebrating more work and doing further research. All the discoveries I made create beautiful design and art and many from the past never received the recognition they should have because of the colour of their skin. . Todays newsletter includes the work of #Paulreverewilliams (designed more than 2500 buildings in Hollywood) learn’t to draw upside down so he could sit opposite his white clients rather than next to them 😬 could only visit the area of the Beverly Hills hotel he designed if escorted by the owner 😬 #roberttrayhamcoles , trying to get my hands on a book called ‘architecture and advocacy’ printed by a small press in buffalo. His goal throughout his career was to make the architecture profession look more like the society it had to serve. The wonderful paintings of #mavispusey , never got the recognition she deserved because of the long-standing biases in the art world. #JoelRobinson , the first African American designer in MoMA’s collection - his story is still being written - a reminder that art and design history is in constant need of reappraisal ... and to creatives working today - the work of @maccollins__ whom I first discovered at the London design festival, the art of @dozie.kanu and a beautiful hybrid piece of art/dance/sculpture and sound by @solangeknowles___ . An article written in Frieze in 2016 by @alice.rawsthorn accompanied by the work of #emorydouglas , imagery from @studiomuseum in Harlem as well as an edit of informative links to educate, donate ( if you are able) and advocate for the cause. . Do it! • “Mavis Pusey, a painter and printmaker who drew on inspirations as varied as sunsets and scenes of urban demolition to create striking abstract works full of geometric forms, died on April 20 in Falmouth, Va. She was 90. Hallie Ringle, curator of contemporary art at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, who has been working on a traveling exhibition of Ms. Pusey’s work, confirmed her death and said she had dementia.
